mdooher: Anyone seen the new speeding advert with the speed the woman is driving written on everyone's back? I don't get it, If she had been travelling at 50 she would have hit the girl.

If the message was supposed to be that she could have either stopped or the impact would have been less if she was doing <=50, it got lost as soon as the victim pops up apparently undamaged & glaring at her.

I love the magic 50 number, its like the magic 100 number. The message is "If you travel under these speeds you are magically safe". "If you travel even 4km over these speeds you are clearly a child killer."

I think the intention is not to provide people a video to examine in depth stopping distances down to millimeters or to examine frame by frame to determine the exact speed on impact. It is simply slow down drive safely in accordance to the law, maybe save lives including your own.

Then why not make an ad that shows that? I guess if you are assuming all New Zealanders are idiots then the ad might work.

But we are not all idiots.

For those of us with even a basic understanding of physics the inconsistencies are so glaring as to make us laugh at the stupidity of it and by inference the stupidity of those that authorized it.

So even at an unconscious level we think "If those that are in charge of our safety on the roads don't understand basic physics why should I listen to them?"

I think the truth is that the Police or whoever commissioned that ad lost control to the creatives who didn't deliver. The "Ghost Chips" ad on the other hand was great.

Then they should have rejected it, I bet the person who has the authority to authorize it has a marketing background not a psychology, engineering or physics one.

I still haven't seen the speed camera :-)

How the hell did you manage that speed in Gordon Rd. I'm normally far too busy dodging mobility scooters and Mazda Demios looking for a park down there.

They have a real cheek putting a speed camera there considering this is the one place in country that the police have been complaining about the slow driving. (Although it looks like the district commander might have shut that conversation down).

it's a 20 second adv, sheesh, most don't care that at the precise moment of impact the vehicle was travelling at 53.128467KMH or she took 23.897465meters to stop. Appreciate the message and learn that is what is intended.

I care, the ad is telling stupid people that if they drive below 50km/h they will be magically safe. It also tells them that girl was not to blame.

All it tells me, is that people with marketing degrees are everything I'd always thought they were.

I recieved a $30.00 ticket too for traveling 4KM/h over the speed limit. I was traveling in unknown territory. It's harder to keep yourself safe by concentrating on the geometry of the road as well as an appropriate speed while not being so slow you piss the person off that's traveling behind you. Clock watches are far more dangerous if you ask me.

I agree the magical rounded 50/100 safety numbers is silly. Those ads should be telling people to take responsibility for themselves after showing them the most violent, graphic, emotional/dramatic crash they have on record. Limbs flying everywhere, blood pouring out of the car and emergency services cutting their lifeless, battered and bloodied bodies out of the wreck.

Imagine what the parents of little children would ask their parents after watching that. They would all get the message, that's for damn sure.

Shouldn't the message be "Look before you run out onto the road"? Bit last last years piece of cr&&p which blamed the person doing say 107k for killing the driver who drove thru a stop sign in front of him.

The policy used to be a 10% tolerance.

When introduced, the fixed speed cameras were supposed to target only the top 15% of speeders.

It's a ratchet. They will crank down the rules tighter and tighter until there is significant complaint.

A Holden Kingswood 6 up with warrantable tyres and worn shock absorbers 100km/h
a band new BMW 1 series straight off the showroom floor with just the driver 104km/h

yep zero tolerance will save lives alright
