Try Vultr using this link and get us both some credit:
paulmilbank: Honestly, your requirements are clearly laid out and easily achievable. Go on trademe, put your specs in to the motors search box and search, you will find plenty of 3 year old cars with +- 50000 on the clock. Limit it by whatever you want. 15 grand should get you something pretty nice. Spend some of yours and whatever your dad chips in and you should still have a few grand in the bank.
Not sure if this giant TM link will work, but see what it returns anyway.
My pick would be a Jazz like this simply because you can flatten out the seats and load them up like crazy, but that side is up to you. Your budget and expectations are reasonable. Just narrow it down until you find something you really like.
Heck, if you really wanted, you could buy a brand new Mirage hatch for $18000 odd and still have money left over. (Not suggesting that the Mirage is what you should buy, just to show your budget is reasonable even for a car brand new on the lot.)

Yeah I saw that offer from Mitsubishi, $9000 now (cash or trade) and the other $9000 in 12 months time on a brand new Mirage with 10 year warranty.
I much liked the alternatives
- Burn $9000
- Spend $9000 on something other than a Mitsubishi
I digress :)
Maybe look at the mazda 2, which is a good vehicle. Not as nice to drive as the mazda 3, but around 10k less on price. You haven't really told us your requirements, as there are a lot of small cars on the market. Even the Toyota Yaris isn't a bad shopping basket.
joker97: you MUST service at the dealer every SIX months. $$$ ! but the 10 year is the drive train isn't it? everything else only 5 years? or is gthe mirage a 1 off special?
and i don't think you can transfer it more than once. ie third owner doesn't get it.
i might be wrong, been a while since i looked at mitsis
Jase2985: 3 year old NZ New Honda Jazz, can get one with super low K's and they are mighty large inside and very very good on gas
mattwnz: See if you can find something around the 2 year old mark, which still has a year warranty on it. Maybe a private seller on trademe maybe selling something. My brother got a civic for 40% off the retail buying privately, and it was only 2 years old. The seller had a big loan on it and wanted to get out of it. I also like the toyota 86. However no toyota dealers were able to get one in for a test drive, so unless you can test drive one they are not really an option. It has a sister made by Subaru, which is essentially the same car. Not very fuel efficient though compared to todays small cars, and not much room either.
wasabi2k:
Alternatively - ex lease. They seem to be relatively cheap, well maintained (as they are usually dealer serviced) and in most cases well looked after.
