Wasn't last year's road toll higher when they lowered the tolerance due to the very bad and noticeable erratic driving it caused?

But do you not find it interesting that it is only the road rules, in particular the speed limit (which collect revenue) that the Police regularly campaign on and not any of the other New Zealand laws (which coincidentally don't earn any revenue). To me this completely lacks credibility because of their lack of action across all other parts of their jobs except for where they really have to act. I am a big supporter of our Police, but IMO I think the powers-that-by as misguided on prioroties.

Absolutely, sounds like a good idea to me.

Some states have double demerits for committing more than one offence (speeding in a 12 month period, I think that's a great idea too.

If the police are just trying to get people to slow done during the holiday period when there are a lot more vehicles, and less experienced drivers, on the road then whatever means is OK.

In my view the biggest contributors that have saved lives are safer cars, better roads, and general public acceptance that it is not OK to drink/drive.

eg, just the other day I passed an accident on the new eastern link between Mt Maunganui/Papamoa....straight road, sunny & dry, this guy had smashed into the median barrier. Had that been 6 months ago it would likely have been a fatal.

The focus on reducing the tolerance has minimal benefit. Having 5kph less speed probably won't reduce the frequency of accidents as generally people drive to the conditions (if they are like me), but it will reduce the damage done when an accident does occur.

How do you stop old people from driving on the wrong side of the road? We've had 12 or so cases in november alone, the latest being just the other day. ...

It cannot be an education thing, people know the rule is to drive on the left. If these people were foreigners it would be across the front pages of the national papers.

Personally I wish they'd spend a bit more time pulling over the, can't think of a nice word for them, objects who grind around town at 30 in a 50 zone. They sure cause enough frustration.

And if its not for the money, I naturally assume there won't be any fines imposed at all if caught between the old tolerance and the new, just a warning ?

Thats exactly how I got my first (and only) speeding ticket. Stuck behind trucks going less than the 90 KM/H speed limit. Hit a passing lane when the limit increased to 100 KM/H. Both trucks accelerated to the new speed limit. I zoomed past them. Got pinged for doing 113 KM/H.

I know I was 100% in the wrong, but its no less frustrating. And its something that I'm sure many of us would've done (although I probably won't do it again in future :-( )

If you overtake them safely on a straight clear section of road, your likely to exceed the speed limit, as you don't want to be on the wrong side of the road for too long.

So please, don't speed, we don't need the carnage on the road over Christmas\holidays, but please try and keep to the speed limit, and if you do have a queue of traffic behind you and you do wish to travel at 85km/h, please pull over and let the traffic behind pass where it is safe to do so.

Then there's the people who sit close behind while you're doing 100 (according to your speedo, at least), back off when you hit a passing lane and slow down to 80-90, then close in again once you speed back up to 100 after the passing lane.

It's a voluntary tax.
Plus, most of the time on the main roads these days it's rare to be able to get up to the posted limits, let alone exceed them for long. Xmas period you just cater for longer trips than usual and go with the flow without worrying about it.
Yes I agree that it's not the correct focus and there are far more problems on the roads than those traveling between 4 and 10kmh over the limit but it's by far the easiest one to monitor.

Well the problem here is - all the those doing 80K then doing 105 - 110 on the passing lanes.

Anyway I tend to work out the speed of the car in front throw cruise control on and not worry about it. Wish my car had adaptive cruise control so it can slow down and speed up based on the car in front but cant have everything :)
