I thought the NZ limit was based on stopping from x km/h in y metres rather than absolute weights. Most vehicles would have the same ability to absorb additional weight, it's when the trailer is also braked that the ability of the vehicle to control the trailer comes in. Then the Pajero can tow 2-3 times ASX weight depending on model and towbar.

Ignoring the manufacturer specified limit would probably count towards the careless driving charge following the prang.

You have to be able to stop within 7m at 30km/hr. But if your trailer weighs 2,000kg or more it must have brakes.

In Aussie you are required to have brakes at 750kg.

If you go any car manufacturers .nz site you will see their vehicles all rated at a maximum of 750kg un-braked.

Can my Pajero tow/stop a 751kg un-braked trailer safely? On sealed roads no problem. Unsealed I'd be taking it very quietly.

I've towed my 2.5 tonne boat with brakes not functioning with my Safari - actually not too bad, but the truck has very large disk brakes front and rear, I knew the brakes had failed and couldn't fix them on the spot (broken line) and took it easy to get home and fix it.

"4 scoops of builders mix" on the single axle cheap unbraked Chinese trailer bought on TM, assembled with bolts made out of colby cheese - now that really bugs me. I see them so heavily loaded that the tyres are bulging - looking ready to burst, and towed behind some 4 cylinder family hatchback. At least with a boat or caravan etc, you should know what it weighs. Some load of stuff from the garden supply store, few people seem to be able to work out the weight.
