You have a radar detector because you expect that you'll probably break the law, but you want to evade penalties.

The morality of that is a separate issue.

I have it because it gives me an extra sense, and who wouldn't want that? I feel blind without it. It is people who track the locations of speed traps who expect they will probably break the law but want to avoid penalties. I just like to know what is going on around me. That van parked on the side of the road? Is that one? My detector tells me if it is. Is there a police car up ahead out of sight? I look around at the traffic and see who is likely to get pinged.

My detector often goes off. Some alerts are false positives, some are real. All of them keep reminding me to check my speed. I am much more aware of it than I used to be. I am a better driver as a result.

I wasn't "putting you in a box", but congrats for responding on behalf of someone else with your denial.

Pray tell - what is this (probably very obscure) "very different reason" you seem to have obliged yourself to disclose?

This is a geek forum - and I'm fascinated.

for on the road, works far more easier than a SDR for an inquisitive fella.

goes down with all the other weird and wonderful things i do out of curiosity.

i don't call it denial, but for your pleasure;

one of the few times it has actually work well for me with the flashy lights is when one was parked behind me. (no harm, no foul here. wasn't in the wrong.)

As for my only speeding fine, well... That day was simply dumb actions all round so it wouldn't have benefited. (I was young, i did dumb things. i took note.)

I personally travel Auckland to Hamilton weekly, some weekends multiple times. 95% of that is vans so if my objective was to "beat the cameras" i'd be seriously loosing the game...

Why answer a straightforward question like that with a question?

You have a radar detector because you expect that you'll probably break the law, but you want to evade penalties.

The morality of that is a separate issue.

Why ask a question if you apparently know the answer all ready?

Because the poster evaded the answer, so he provided it

Know the answers now, apparently.

If not used for evading traffic fines, radar detectors can be used by boffins for activities somewhat similar to trainspotters using binoculars.

As they allegedly improve driver behaviour/skill, then they should be made compulsory in all motor vehicles.

Your on a tech forum, and find this surprising?

I didn't evade the answer. I thought it was so obvious that an answer wasn't needed. I think someone here mentioned Waze. That is for people who want to speed without getting caught. All my radar detector does is constantly remind me of what can happen if I do speed. I see that as a win because my speed does tend to creep up if I don't think about it.

Bollocks to this.

Be honest.

The reason people buy radar detectors is so they can drive faster than the speed limit.

Anything else is just weasel words.

I might disagree with you but I'll credit you for being honest and facing the criticism of others.

I don't care what you think. I'm not a racer and I don't normally speed. When I do go over the limit it is because I'm not thinking about it. If I wanted to get away with going fast I would employ other means.

You must be fun at parties.....

Moving on......

This has, however answered a question i have been having with my Belltronics doing it of late.  Was wondering about the random triggers, mainly in normal traffic.

Were you getting it with the V1 alot?

Must admit, before today if someone called me a "boffin" at a party, i'd be wonder a few things...

  1. Are they drunk enough to make up/slur words
  2. Am i actually somehow that far gone?
  3. Do i pull out my phone and google this word.....

You can get an Eroad unit which has posted speed and on screen speed so you can maintain your speed a lot better and have an audible warning when you go over the areas speed limit. Then you are not in the wrong.

It depends on what you mean by a lot. Not constantly or continuously, but often enough that I didn't think it was police standing by the side of the road. I have now done some reading and it seems that laser detectors will become increasingly useless as more and more modern cars incorporate lasers as safety devices. It is probably the age of the NZ fleet that has prevented that from happening already.

That's a cool product.

as mentioned earlier, Waze also does a pretty good job at this.

Tells you the current speed limit, turns into a sign when your at the limit and over it, it goes red.
