I have a Valentine. While driving home today, I was followed by another car for a long way. Nothing sinister about that, it is a narrow, winding country road.

I'm as sure as I can be that the other car was not police. Yet the entire way my laser detector kept going off every few seconds for short bursts of time. This lasted about 20 minutes. I couldn't see well into the car so don't know if there were children in it.

I often also get brief laser hits in places where there probably are no police speed checks. I usually attribute these to someone playing with a pointer. But today's experience makes me wonder if there is something else going on. Do modern cars have any devices that would set off laser detectors? Is there anything, other than someone playing with a pointer, that would cause this?

It's usually a Volvo, Honda Fit/Jazz or Ford Modeos being the most common to trigger it.. it's the driver aid technology each car uses for things like collision detection or adaptive cruise control which uses laser to determine distance from the car in front

I'm a V1 owner as well, you can either disable laser detection or deal with it. Bike cops still use laser unfortunately.

No worries

Usually if a car is following me and tripping the laser detection I just turn the volume down till it's no longer following me

I also have this https://store.valentine1.com/store/closeup_20110.asp which sits in my dashboard and is closer to eyesight vs the radar detector which is sitting up high so I don't have to rely on the audio too much

experience much the same with mine, although not a V1.

i tend to just silence it.

Really cool kiwi ingenuity just down the road from me, radar sensor attached to a pole, solar panel and lights.

Flags to the people in their hidden driveway, there is an oncoming car. Far more effective than the classic mirror approach.

I saw somewhere the police were using decomissioned radars to slow those with detectors. They would put one up at a trouble spot, and the racers would think it was a speed trap and slow down. Also pretty ingenious.

Mine is just off now, its basically a mazda detector on one band and gives falses on laser all the time too. And does nothing most of the time with the new speed camera vans. Hard to know if it doing something is just a well timed false or actually doing something. Its just a beltronics that came installed in the car. Used to be useful till every mazda started to blast out radar all the time.

waze does a good job on the vans...

The vans use low power K-band radar and angled quite low, so usually you can see the van before it sees you. Unless of course it's round a blind corner ^_^

I disable K band unless I'm driving between urban areas otherwise it's just a K band fest with all the automatic opening doors etc

The Vans use RedFlex and their frequency is pretty low on the K band, I think around 23.050GHz and most detectors (even the highly acclaimed and arguably the best Uniden R3) can barely detect them but if they do you might be too late.
