Agree with previous poster. Unless govt comes to the party with mandates or subsidies on battery replacement this will probably be a niche market for a long time. When batteries become cheaper (eventually), newer used cars will be more attractive and the old Leafs (8y+) will be written off quickly in my opinion.

I might still be a niche market customer myself being a reasonably early adopter of a 2016 30kW Leaf and not wanting to contribute to wasting even more than we already do with gas powered cars by reducing life cycle of electric car significantly. So following developments with interest surely. In my case a more cost effective 40kW replacement might also be adequate.

today decided to take the leave on a longer drive - longer being 22km.

on the way there drove like a gran and SOC went from 74 to 60%. mainly 50k road, stretches of 70kph, and a few hills nothing too major.

thought yay that's pretty cool.

on the way back decided to use the motorway. &^%$ under full acceleration the SOC drops by 1% every 2 seconds. i did a few tests as it's a motorway and everytime i floor the accelerator 1% drop every 2 seconds.

by the time i got home i think it went from 60% to 10% probably. also didn't drive like a gran in the other non motorway roads.

You may be interested to see the battery degradation rate of my 2017 model Nissan Leaf 40kW. After initial purchase (2nd hand Japanese import), the health levels dropped rather quickly. I understand this is common for imported models.

But, more recently the health levels have had little change.

This suggests to me that I can probably expect a long life from this vehicle.

summary

green - LFP - 40kwh

cost? - 1/3 of the price of a new car of similar specs minus worth of existing battery

when - this year

comment by some person at the end - if your car is gets too worn you theoretically can buy a newer leaf and swap the battery across

I noticed this too from my import, arrived at 86 and tanked immediately but then stabilised into its normal up-in-summer down-in-winter thing.  I hear some people quick charge it a bunch just before sale to pump up the SOH number.

1) Re: Custom made batteries and battery controller Anyone bothered finding out what position Insurance companies have on Leaf with non-genuine, non-factory replacement battery?
Everybody knows you have to disclose modifications. Non factory made battery is a serious modification. Wonder what Insurance company position will be in terms of "market value"?
"agreed value" most likely won't apply. From client's perspective - it is $20K+ for the battery, from Insurance company perspective - non-factory modification to the car with residual value being $350 (scrap value).

2) Re: non-genuine replacement modules. I have not heard about any takers within last 3 years for BC's $20k replacement battery. Only talks.

3) Re: factory made complete battery packs which look identical to original, but made in PRC.

2 independent players (Auckland):
- one had put initial agreements with factory in PRC on hold last year and switched to more streamlined business.
- another one (also Auckland) I was talking to recently was considering factory made Leaf modules, but his existing business is running good enough with steady cash flow to dive into uncertainty. Main concern in his case is quality which is hard to verify or control. Few returned expensive packs under warranty could easily kill the business. I.e. risk is too high.
Also with both players - they said the space required for storage of many Leaf battery packs (think 40 feet container as a minimum) - they can utilize with much better ROI for something else.

P.S. If somebody sourced donor battery in Auckland - I can program it to the Leaf. Can also re- program LBC if you swap modules for better ones.

Hey RUKI - do you know where the microphone is located on the 2016 models? Ours died a little while ago I'm tossing up whether its worth trying to replace it. Which also kind of depends on whether I'm buying a new battery for it I suppose.

My virtual Leaf set up has Mic input, which means I know where (which pin) the Mic should be plugged.
Usually built-in Mics in cars are above your head where the lights are.
Installers put aftermarket Mics on the top of steering column.
I have couple of such aftermarket Mics (new, unused).

I have 2015 30KWH Nissan Connect units in English which are plug and play into 24kWh older Leafs. I supply interconnect plugs. You keep your existing one in case you upgrade to 30kWh and sell old Leaf with original unit and transfer English one into next Leaf.
I also have 2012-2014 Leaf and e-NV200 headunits in Japanese.
Call me. Number is on my site and YouTube channel. Or p-m.

Hey, I took the plunge of a 2nd LEAF yesterday and now that I will be charging two cars most days, I was wondering which power provider current has the best deal for for EV owners?

I see that Contact Energy has a deal for all you can eat free power between 9 and midnight.

What do you guys use?
