Hey, I took the plunge of a 2nd LEAF yesterday and now that I will be charging two cars most days, I was wondering which power provider current has the best deal for for EV owners?

I see that Contact Energy has a deal for all you can eat free power between 9 and midnight.

What do you guys use?

I'm with Meridian on EV plan, 12 cents per kWt from 9pm to 7am.

22 cents per day

Id hang off till April when Low User Charges are being wound back, there will probably be new deals from most providers

By 'wound back' do you mean that that is the end of the year cycle and they update the plans like the telcos?

There is a law change. It is the start of the mulit year phase out of forcing power companies to offer low user plans. In short, standard user plans typically subsidies low user plans. over a few years this is going away. Likely power companies will be able to slightly decrease their standard user plans as a result.

This morning I tried both chargers at the Plant Barn in Silverdale and the New Orewa and could not get any of them to charge me - communications failure. This meant getting home was very interesting indeed. I did make it, and the 16A charger is operating normally. I warned my wife and she said she had had a problem too a couple of days ago. Yesterday I saw a lady plugging and unplugging her Leaf into the New World Orewa fast charger and waving her hands, clearly unable to get it to start.

The 12V battery is only a few months old so it seems unlikely to be that.

There are no DTCs on the charger module although the EV/HEV module shows P3171, P3170, P316C - but from memory it has always said that (in other words I don't see anything abnormal about the DTC list from LeafSpy).

I still mostly assume it's the car although the fact I just saw someone else yesterday having a problem with one of the same chargers does make me wonder.

Anyway, I'm trying to find a list of codes - does anyone know what those ones above mean? Once the car has finished slow charging I'll do another clear codes / disconnect 12V / check codes and see what it says.

Maybe the emergency button had been pressed?  Did the charger say ESTOP?

No, but I tried three completely different chargers and had the same problem on all of them - two Vectors at one site, and a ChargeNet at a completely different one. Unlikely to be the chargers.

Yes, I've had it happen occasionally before but usually either reseating the cable or using a different charger has resolved it. First time it's been so stubborn in over 4 years!

Does anyone know of a way to read the SOC of a 2018 model with LeafSpy while the car is charging but off? Searching online, it seems like the only way to achieve that is by sending certain commands to wake the VCM, but LeafSpy Pro doesn't seem to do that?

The use case is to implement charge limit via LeafSpy + Home Assistant to turn off the EVSE when the SOC reaches the set limit.

Got the Leaf booked in in a couple of weeks to have some bad cells replaced which should make a big dent in its range. The other issue it has developed in the last couple of months is 12V battery going flat. The first time it happened someone had left the door ajar while we were on holidays. Charged it up OK, but then a couple of weeks later didn't drive it for a few days and it went flat again. No problem - it's the original battery, had it replaced. It's since done it 4 times with the new battery, with only a couple of days unused in between. :-/

LeafSpy shows a healthy voltage (>14V) and charging current (>30A, checked after the battery was offline charged for ~1hr, so still quite low) when the car is on, but something apparently isn't going to sleep like it used to. They can have a look at that after they've finished with the main battery.

just in case... you not leaving you OBDII interface connected all the time? I heard that some adapters tend to drain 12v battery.

Not sure about Nissan's, but I've heard other models have had issues with things like the radio, automatic headlights, cameras, and auto wiper modules using up more than their fair share in standby modes. Could try turn everything into manual mode and off and see if you're still seeing a slow drain.

Leaf is known to have fairly poor 12v battery management. Quick google search

https://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?t=22752

In short, it seems the battery is maintained at 13.0V, after a very brief 14.4v boost charge. This is done for efficiency, but it seems that the 14.4v boost is too short, and the 13.0V maintenance is too low to sufficiency charge modern calcium chemistry batteries.

It also has an issue where if it is left plugged in for a long time, the car won't charge the 12v battery apart from when it is initially plugged, which can leave it flat. Solution is to not leave your leaf plugged in, or to set a charge timer when you are away on holiday.

Couple the above with the leaf getting a number of weird issues when the 12V battery gets weak and it is quite problematic & frustrating.

My leaf came with an old school flooded lead acid Battery, and hasn't had any issues in about 18 months. They accept charge at a lower voltage than the newer Calcium stuff.

You could consider giving your battery a decent charge with an external charger, but operating near flat is quite harsh on lead acid batteries, so you may need a replacement battery.

It's hard because the leaf cannot communicate the SOC.

You could do it via a smart power plug like a Kasa - I use one and I can see via home assistant how much energy is being consumed.

So you could for example turn the smart plug off when a certain amount of kw has been consumed.

Potentially you could also have a small app that downloads the leafspy file from dropbox to read the last level of SOC when you arrive home and add that to home assistant and then use it in conjunction with a smart plug like I suggested above.

Failing all that there are some 3rd party wifi modules that let you control the Leaf via the odb port - they don't support the ZE1 model though I think.
