There's already been a proof of concept showing that they can be fooled. The researchers rapidly flashed up speed signs - missed or ignored by the humans but read by the car. Hec, if you just wanted to create havoc you could put up a permanent fake one. I'm sick of all the idiots driving down my street at 100km/hr ... puts up a 10 speed sign ...

The speaker has a vested interest in CyberTruck succeeding.

I'd like all EV's to succeed, though I must admit I prefer cars made for urban driving.

Regarding the CyberTruck, I was more impressed at the launch, but when I saw Musk driving one around in LA, I noticed that it is big. See picture above for a comparison to a Ford F150.

I'd recommend before anyone puts down a deposit in NZ, go to a truck dealer and test drive a Ford F150. Park it in your home garage. Pull into a city parking garage, and drive to the top floor and park (if you leave immediately is should be free.) Try a U turn on a narrow 2 lane road.

Then if you're happy with the experience with living with a full-size truck, put down a deposit.

NZ government policy doesn't consider non-pluggable cars to be EVs.

The Priius Prime is a pluggable.....so it is effectively the only EV Toyota sell.

Will have to see what is around of used Model 3s when the RAV4 Prime comes out. At the moment it seems like a car that would allow me to drive on electric 99% of the time, and allow for long drives when needed.

Lexus is coming out with a pure EV, so probably laying the ground for future Toyota EVs.

Disappointing that Toyota is so far behind.

Agree that pluggable hybrids are not true EVs.

I feel it's down to how the wheels are driven, so I would include vehicles with Range Extenders, although understand these aren't ideal.

IBM's lithium battery uses seawater materials instead of heavy metals

Lithium-ion batteries are seen as a vital technology in our pursuit of sustainable energy, but there is plenty of room for improvement when it comes to their impact on the Earth. The construction of these devices involves sourcing of heavy metals like cobalt, which are expensive and come at significant environmental and humanitarian cost. IBM has this week unveiled a new battery that relies on materials from seawater instead, with its early testing suggesting these components might not mean a compromise in performance, either.

There is a considerable interest in developing alternatives to the heavy metals, such as cobalt and nickel, used in lithium-ion batteries. Cobalt, in particular, has increasingly come under fire of late, with a 2016 investigation by The Washington Post shining a light on the child labor being used in the cobalt mines of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Just this week, a lawsuit was filed against Apple, Google, Microsoft, Dell and Tesla on behalf of 14 Congolese families, whose children were killed or permanently injured while illegally mining the material for use in their products.

Aside from the immediate dangers of cobalt mining in Africa, these operations have also been blamed for devastating landscapes, polluting water supplies, ruining crops and degrading soil.

IBM’s battery doesn’t involve cobalt or nickel, materials that would be used in the cathode component of a typical lithium-ion battery. Its researchers have instead made use of three materials that can be extracted from seawater (though they haven't divulged the names of these ingredients), and added a new type of liquid electrolyte.
