Looks like the LDV eDeliver 3 will be the first of the decent utility EV options here with a somewhat decent starting price

GLMD  cut the price of the EV80, (its big brother) to $50K in 2019.... so it eDeliver would need to be under this....

Adjusting for GDP, if New Zealand did the same here as the UK (in NZD)
  • $1.65 billion plan to ban on internal combustion engine (ICE) sales by 2030

  • grants for electric cars: $79 million

  • funding for EV charging infrastructure: $150 million
I'd argue with Brexit, and UK COVID crisis, we can afford it more than the UK.

Autotalk.co.nz: British prime minister Boris Johnson bans internal combustion engine (ICE) sales

A ban on internal combustion engine (ICE) sales by 2030 has been announced by British prime minister Boris Johnson under a 10-point ‘green industrial revolution’ plan.

However, the sale of some hybrid cars and vans will continue until 2035 in the UK.

The [NZD $23 billion] plan includes [NZD $1.1 billion] in grants for electric cars, [NZD $2.1 billion] funding for EV charging infrastructure, boosts for offshore wind power, hydrogen production, new nuclear power based on small, advanced reactors; and supporting green energy use in the maritime and aviation sectors.

Johnson says the green plan will create and support hundreds of thousands of ‘green’ jobs while moving quickly towards net zero emissions by 2050.

Public transport, cycling (including e-bikes) and walking are encouraged.

Reaction so far includes reports from some the move is “bold” for electric transport which will create big ripples in other countries, but there’s also criticism the plan doesn’t go far enough and shouldn’t include nuclear power.

Those ripples are likely to hit New Zealand, with climate change minister James Shaw already urging action before the country becomes a dumping group for the UK’s ICE vehicles.

I'm not sure why we would be. Surely the ban is only new registrations of ICE vehicles, and existing vehicles can continue to be driven until they naturally reach end of life? Besides which, any ICE vehicle already on a UK road in 2020 is going to be worth less than the cost of freight to NZ by 2030.

Plus the fact that they may still be using salt to deice their roads so you'll get an imported rust bucket in a couple of years.

CNBC: GM withdraws support for Trump’s lawsuit against California over emissions

  • GM is withdrawing from litigation led by the Trump administration against California over the state being allowed to set its own fuel economy and emissions regulations.

  • President-elect Joe Biden was widely expected to allow California the right to set its own standards.

  • GM along with Fiat Chrysler, Toyota and other smaller automakers initially supported the litigation in late-2019.

General Motors is withdrawing from litigation led by the Trump administration against California over the state’s right to set its own fuel economy and emissions regulations, distancing itself from President Donald Trump.

In a letter Monday to environmental leaders, GM CEO Mary Barra said the company’s decision to withdraw from the litigation is effective immediately. It follows President-elect Joe Biden’s Nov. 3 election, his support for electric vehicles as well as his call for unity in the country, she said.

“We believe the ambitious electrification goals of the President-elect, California, and General Motors are aligned to address climate change by drastically reducing automobile emissions,” Barra wrote.

Vehicles are still going to have to meet emissions rules like any other imports, he could increase compliance to Euro VI which would mean we're getting the most emissions-friendly ICE vehicles only - sometimes the Greens imply that it is total open season on importing anything you want and that's not the case at all.

To be fair to the Greens, it WAS like that when they said those things. The emissions changes were only announced recently.

We've had minimum Euro IV compliance for some time now - at least four years now - for anything newer than 20 years old.

There really is little government love for EVs in Australia ....

Victoria have proposed to follow SA and slug a RUC on EV drivers ... 2.5c/km...

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-22/victoria-electric-car-tax-reax-industry-infrastructure-greens/12908238

Although on the flip side it would be cheaper than NZ if our EV exemption expires at the end of 2021 (7.6 cents//km)

Some interesting comment on peak oil and the ongoing advances of EVs over ICE vehicles. The changing attitudes of the major oil companies is also quite telling: https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2020-peak-oil-era-is-suddenly-upon-us/

Although the term "peak oil" has been flipped on its head,

Originally it was a supply constraint that would simply force the price of oil through the roof and cripple economies that were reliant on imported oil..

This has not been proved to be a false assertion and peak oil now refers to demand destruction driving down the price below the cost of capital for future exploration , resulting in a decline in production..

There will be a bounce back in oil consumption Post COVID as national and international travel returns, but the trend to electrification will continue, and will continue to pull down demand.
