The rear demister though? That one had me scratching my head a little - how is having a fogged rear window an issue?

If I cant have dark tints because of some concerns about visibility then why the hell should people be allowed to drive around with a fogged up window? Cars all have technology to deal with that, if its inoperative and the car is fogged up then its more dangerous than tints which are apparently a huuuuuuuuge safety issue.

So how do you reconcile a courier van / goods vehicle that legally doesn't require an internal rear view mirror? In fact, any passenger vehicle built before 2000 legally only has to have an external mirror on the drivers side.

Red lights are just an inconvenience now

And they want to lengthen the yellow time to allow people to stop before the red. Can you say double the drag race chance...

agree. My car could take several minutes to clear a frosted over rear view window. I could maybe wipe it down but it still wouldn't be very clear. I'm not going to leave the car running the the driveway like that every frosty winters morning. My side mirrors work perfectly well

Yes but those cameras cost money. Money the government hasn't invested.

I'd invest in a red-light camera in any major city (if it were allowed).  It would pay for itself in a week ...

There was a car accident on SH1 just after Porirua on the way to Wellington. Heavy weekend traffic coming back to the city. At one point it was one lane only with a couple of police cars and ambulance. Plus the construction work for the Transmission Gully, which won't be completed until 2020. So obviously just before we reach the accident point someone merges "like a zip":

Then, just after the accident some muppet hogging the right lane... And another muppet decides to do this in front of me (note that due to the lens the car appears to be further than it was - the old "objects in the mirror are closer than they appear" effect):

I swear people who drive utes like that are most often terrible drivers. Real 4-wheeled pigs.
I see 10 examples every day......minimum.

I've nearly been run over several times by drivers running red lights.

Two groups who make me cautious: Male drivers and females drivers. They are the worst. ;-)

I asked a beat cop about this one day and he said the policy in those cases was to encourage the council to convert these intersections to give ways !

This is good in a way, honestly.  There are some stops where I think a give way would do perfectly fine and there are some give way intersections where I think, "This should definitely be a stop, what were they thinking?"

STOP should only apply when turning right - you should be able to simply GIVE WAY at a STOP when turning left. There are very few places where there should even be STOP signs just as there are very few places there should be red arrows.

I can't say I agree. In some cases a stop action is much safer than a GIVE WAY. For example, when a slow road joins a fast road, especially if the fast road is not straight. People need to come to a complete stop to take a long, good look down the fast road.

Of course the beat cop I briefly discussed the issue with did not go into so much detail or even mention any considerations like this - as if all stops could be converted to give ways without any safety repercussions.

I see in Curtis street, wellington (where crofton downs road meets the main road to karori) give ways have been converted to stops, presumably due to a spate of crashes. The rate of drivers obeying the stop would have to be around 10%. Those drivers that stop seem to do so more because of traffic congestion.

It would be easy money for the old bill.

I like the way you can treat a red light as a stop sign in the USA when turning right. In other words as long as you stop and look left, you can proceed through a right turn if clear.

We should be able to do that at red lights when turning left.

Only in certain states, not all. Check the local laws before driving and getting a patrolman behind you...
