Batman: I almost bought a Tesla when I realised there were no knobs and buttons. I can't see myself scrolling the ipad to use the wipers.

I watched Clarkson's test of the Model X last night.

Amusing watching it burn off the R8 but the price...!

A mere NZ$220,000 with all the options...

I'd just buy a Range Rover or a Porsche and use the cash I saved to buy fuel.

The lowest spec tesla in NZ is about $77k, so not too bad, if you compare it to the price of cars over the last few decades, which haven't increased too much.

But what I don't understand is why they charge extra for any colour apart from white pearl. Even black is a few grand more more than white. Some companies like mazda charge extra for red, but other colours are the same price. They seem to be all about the upsell, and rice similar to the way apple does, where the most basic model isn't that great.

It's nothing like that. If anything, a Tesla is easier to control in many respects than most other cars. It's almost all right there on the wheel or the stalks next to it.

So you don't need to use the ipad to wind down the windows?

It’s called “A hint of Musk”.

tripper1000:

I think touch screens in cars have been normalised somewhat by touch screen phones, but paradoxically we accept you shouldn't be using those when driving. Any control that takes your eyes off the road is a bad idea. Controls in cars need to be tactile so that they can be operated by feel, and ideally, without removing hands from steering wheel as well.

Of course, the autonomous driving of the Tesla mkaes this less important.

Ha!

(I hadn't actually thought about asking the voice assistant if it can lower the windows. Might have to try that...)

A few tidbits this week:

Toyota came out and said they'll unveil a full BEV SUV in the coming months. They were meant to demonstrate a working solid-state cell prototype at the Olympics which was yeeted for obvious reaons. If Toyota has made solid-state viable then that would give some weight to their change in tack in the last couple of months - moving away from the 'self-charging' garbage to the recently unveiling a range of EVs and now launching one of them.

The Aussies have found that adding manganese to LFP massively improves the potential for density - by 25%. LFPs cells are resilient when it comes to charging but feel the cold and have massively reduced range in colder climates (Chinese Model 3s currently use them and they're causing some headaches in winter). They also seem  to be forsaking nickel and cobalt, which would let them side-step commodities being bought up by other suppliers.

QuantumScape (VW) has come out and saying their Solid-state battery has been fine-tuned and they're good to go; which is kind of insane. Still a way off production yet but with car manufacturers rapidly changing their plans, manufacturing timelines could be massively shortened.

Many Toyota articles are saying 500KM range and 10 minute charge to 100%. New Solid State battery type. Toyota have over 1000 patents in the SSB area. This could be the big one.

Looks promising. No word on cycles, or cost, compared to Lithium Ion EV's. How is the supply of raw materials? If they have better range, cost than todays EV's that may cause people to hold off, or manufacturers to reduce price of today's EV's.

As someone who has driven a Toyota Hybrid for the last 5 years, I can state the only thing that is garbage about them is the ridiculous use of ‘self-charging’ in Toyota/Lexus advertising. To that I would respond and say anyone to doesn’t realise what the energy source of their vehicle is, probably shouldn’t hold a driver’s licence.

If SSBs can be produced with the range and charge times referenced earlier, and not add $40K to the cost of the vehicle, they will indeed lead to a revolution.

As long as they don’t rely on too many rare earth metals because I was listening to a podcast recently that stated the world supply of rare earth metals would be needed to fully electrify the UK fleet, let alone the rest of the world.

These 2 videos (both from UK based YouTubers) are worth the watch.

The first from Harry's Garage talks of Fleet size and electricity production in the UK (maybe not as relevant in NZ). Interesting point towards the end that in the UK, for a business the EV is fully tax deductable.

The second from Tim Burton (aka Shmee150) around the running costs of his new EV (Taycan Turbo S)
