Scott3:

Nissan did what it took to be a major early player in the EV space (including cutting corners incl active battery cooling to keep prices down). This hasn't got them much loyalty from their owners, with many of them loving driving electric, but keen to switch to another brand when they upgrade. Not something toyota will want to replicate.

Indeed, that corner cutting is a double-edged sword. It meant a Leaf was within my price range when it was time to buy one in the first place. It also means that the car is far outlasting the battery with the mileage I'm putting on it, and they have not come to the party with any options to ameliorate that. So yeah ... later in the year, when I plan to get around to replacing it, it's probably not going to be with another Leaf.

AutoNews: Nissan flips the switch on electric reboot

Nissan Motor Co. is accelerating the rollout of electric vehicles in China under its main brand and its local, no-frills Venucia marque as the Japanese automaker overhauls a strategy in the world’s biggest auto market...

The China strategy is a key pillar of Nissan’s turnaround, with a focus on producing profitable vehicles for China, Japan and the United States, rather than chasing all-out global growth...

Nissan plans to launch three cars in China this year:
  • EV:the new all-electric Ariya crossover
  • hybrid: a significant redesign of the X-Trail utility vehicle
  • hybrid: Sylphy compact car

These guys look like having a viable battery upgrade strategy for LEAFs https://evsenhanced.com/services/hv-battery-swaps-and-upgrades/

Honestly hinting there may or may not be a subsidy is not helping EV sales.

I'm in the crowd that says "I've been waiting this long. If I wait a little longer, I could save thousands."

News hub: Jacinda Ardern encourages higher spending on cars to reduce emissions as ACT fears for less fortunate

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is encouraging Kiwis to spend more on cars to purchase environmentally-friendly options, but ACT's climate spokesperson says not everyone can afford to.

..."The message I'd send to consumers now is, when you purchase something as significant as a vehicle, often - and it's human behaviour - you tend to look at the price on that day to buy that vehicle. I just encourage consumers to think about that lifetime cost - think about over the entire time you're going to own that car," Ardern said.

"We don't tend to do that as New Zealanders. Actually, some of those cars on the lot might look like they cost a little bit more will be cleaner for the environment but will cost you less over the course of your time with that vehicle, so just factor that in."

...The Government will consider options for an incentive scheme to help Kiwis make the switch to clean cars. Further announcements on its plan to reduce transport emissions are expected in the coming months.

Typical wishy-washy polly-speak.

Almost every developed country has incentive schemes to get buyers into new EVs.

Buyers want immediate savings not 20 years down the line.

Pull finger Labour !

😝

Would spending the money on more and better charging stations be a better investment ?

Any subsidy is a minor part of new electric car cost anyway, so not a huge benefit or encouragement perhaps ?

More faster charging stations might be greater incentive to encourage people timid that range is going to bite them.

A complication of that is the potential competition with existing providers such as ChargeNet.

Also EV owners very soon learn that public charging facilities are the most expensive and probably least reliable (e.g. queues, out of service) way to charge their vehicles. For out of province journeys they serve a purpose but for day to day requirements home charging facilities rule.

From what Ive read here, charging seems no issue for most.

If you can afford a new EV a subsidy won't matter. I'll take free money though.

If you can't afford it, the subsidy isn't relevant

Its gangbusters in Norway, their subsidies actually make EV's cheaper than the ICE equivalent. That would work :-)

We need Govt and Corporates to buy up big, that will leak into mainstream in a few years.

We need a good range of sizes, types, models, makes, and they all have good and continually good stocks.

Arguably, it is still relevant. NZ has a pretty substantial used car market, but at some point in time all those used cars were new. If you can encourage more new vehicle buyers to get an EV (by subsidy or other means) rather than ICE, then proportionately you get more EVs into the fleet; this means more choice and affordability for the 2nd/3rd/4th buyers down the track. A subsidy or other similar incentive doesn't just mean a short term one-off benefit for the new vehicle buyer, but a quicker turnover of the country's fleet towards EVs which would benefit all.

The problem here is there isn't many new models. If you are partial to one or two brands there probably isnt much or any to choose from. If we shipped in shiploads, people will buy, despite the premium but they don't seem to be here in volume. The best option seems to be corporates and Govt to bulk import, but that's assuming we can get access to volume shipments. I feel that the need right now isnt to encourage new buyers, because these that want one now can get one now. The issue is there isnt  make I like or a model in that make that I like. ICE offers a lot of makes and each has a range of models, if they all had EV equivalents, job done, but we seem a long way from that. In short the buyers are there, but where are the cars?

New Zealand's move away from ICE transport (or not) will not be driven by government policy but by what's being made for other markets.

Lets face it our monthly motor vehicle sales are accounted for by morning tea time (probably by 8:30) on the first Monday of each month. Motor vehicle manufacturers won't be making vehicle for New Zealand we'll be tagged into other production runs.

We'll take what we are given.
