A Holden Kingswood 6 up with warrantable tyres and worn shock absorbers 100km/h
a band new BMW 1 series straight off the showroom floor with just the driver 104km/h

yep zero tolerance will save lives alright

They could of course do nothing, and we will have to put up with annual road tolls of 700 plus again, but thats cool it means the boys can play with their toys on the nations roads.

I too take some issue with the way ads are presented.

Glaring mistakes such as misrepresenting the way safety features such as ABS/traction control and airbags wok only makes people laugh at the ads. It doesn't drive a message home.

Likewise I recall the ad from ~10 years ago that showed a jogger running straight out in front of a car and saying that if the driver had been going 50 they would have had time to stop is a flawed argument. Regardless of the speed somebody walking out without looking is the actual problem. You could have just as easily argued that if the car was doing 70 it would have actually passed the jogger rather than hitting her.

always interesting how a few get upset when they get pinged for going over the limit, regardless of what, if any, tolerance there is its still over the limit unless you can prove you that your clocked speed was wrong.

With the speeding tickets I've received I'm accepting of them as I'm the one to blame not the people doing their job.

As an aside it keeps taxes down with peeps getting fined so I'm happy with that.

Totally off topic but I recall a discussion (argument) with a union rep after we sacked a guy for stealing milk from a place I woorked a long time ago. His whole argument was that it was only milk so I said at what cost does it become theft then , to which he had no answer so its black or white either you break the law or you don't its the mitigating circumstances that should decide the punishment. Amazing the amount of people blame everyone else for something they do wrong when they know the difference between right and wrong.

or they could do another experiment like they did at Christmas and kill a few more.

How about doing something that works, lets see... Naked streets in cities, Separated highway from Auckland to Invercargill, fix up the rail network and ban the trucks again, force cyclists to use cycle lanes if available, take away the stupid speed signs on every bend (only deceptive or surprise bends should have them), so people have to learn how to read the road properly, create and enforce minimum speed limits, make it an offence to pass a stationary school bus (like the states).

Nah lets just keep flogging the dead horse

How about doing something that works, lets see... Holy cow has NZ suddenly got a massive fiscal surplus? or are you suggesting a 300% increase in road taxes?

I agree with the school bus idea, disagree with the suggested speed sign for bends idea they harm no one and may actually save lives. Agree with Cyclist must use lanes if provided. I agree with the truck idea for ecology reasons.

Some ideas of mine are....

Reduce speed limits on many Rural Roads to 80kmh
Reduce speed limits on difficult Hill Roads etc (eg Rimutaka Hill Road) to 70kmh
Reduce City Speed limits to 30kmh
Reduce Urban Speed limits to 40kmh

well I would have thought that the speed camera was proof therefore its up to the other party to prove its wrong, to be honest most of the posts and discussions I've seen and heard the person knew they were over the limit but didn't like having to pay for the privilege.

the police have two tasks. enforce the law. prevention of bad things.

they try their best whether it is the best as we can see is very polarising.

whether the law makes any sense is also polarising as we can see.

I think it (is trying to) caters for the lowest common denominator. the 100ks is for the old holden with worn shocks as someone described. not for the new BMW. unfortunately even greg murphy can be ticketed at 54 over those days.

Changing limits might work in an ideal world where people follow the limits...But people don't follow the limits. That's the problem.

I hope my $30.00 goes towards some kid's defensive driving course. At least then he won't cross the center line and smash in to me in three years time.

I found December a very frustrating month. My 2009 Mitsi Lancer's cruise controller lets the speed get up to 5-ish km/h over the target as you roll over the top of a hill, before it realises it doesn't need the throttle so far open.
I always use the cruise control on the open road and motorway, or I find myself "driving to the conditions". Often I use it in 50s as well, as it does work that slowly.
This latest campaign meant I had to cut out the cruise controller approaching all the brows where speed cameras could be hiding (almost always just over a crest on the Wellington Motorway) so the car didn't lunge past the 4km/h tolerance over the top, and then re-engage it when safe on the other side.
Just to add further grief, the new speed camera on Whitford Brown Ave in Porirua is aimed at a little plateau after a short but medium gradient curving climb directly following a choke point. This means you're on the accelerator after being slowed to 20km/h by somebody turning at the choke point, and you think you're minding your speed then you tip over to the flat bit and boom. I don't know how I didn't get any tickets.
The only solution is to travel 5-10km/h under the limit, making friends and influencing people (but speeding up to 100.00 on those nice safe flat passing lanes).

The issue do I have with such small tolerances, is that without watching the speedo constantly (and therefore taking more of your attention away from what is happening outside of the car), it is VERY easy to vary your speed by say 5km/h without noticing. Especially on a smooth road in a quiet car. In smaller/lower powered cars this may be harder, but if you drive anything with a bit of power, small speed increased as almost undetectable without watching the speedo.

I know exactly what speed I'm doing in the Mrs car by the road noise (mazda 6 2008 wagon). It's horrible.

But when you jump in a V8 with double glazing and amazing sound-proofing, you can be doing 30+ over and not notice quite easily!
I only hear the engine when it's accelerating, wide open throttle.

Not that I do that, of course... I spend all my time with my eyes attached to the speedo. 10k over the limit here is about $500.

Same applies to the current ad. Both actors walk out onto the road from in front of the parked vehicle without looking.

When I was a kid (yeah, ages ago) we were taught to look right, then left, and then right again before crossing a road, and then cross when safe to do so. Even though this is what I teach/taught my children, it would seem the powers that be have decided you can now cross a road wherever and whenever you wish and it's up to drivers to ensure they stop to allow you to cross. No wonder kids these days just walk out in front of cars and hurl abuse at drivers.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.
