What I'd like to know, if it has happened, is have NZ EV owners experienced instances of Public chargers not working\being faulty. Back in the summer on a road trip back from Rotorua to Wellington, I did see an instance where the public charger at the Waiouru Army Museum was offline, and a user was having to wait until it became available again.

...

...

I haven't had any problems with public chargers yet. I haven't come across any that have been broken and I also haven't had to wait. Broken chargers do happen though and are especially annoying for people stopping in towns that have only the one DC charger. But as with the above, this is becoming less of an issue as many towns and cities start to gain more than a single charge spot.

Yes, one of my brother's hit a snag in Thames several weeks ago, en route to Pauanui.  Charged up at Pokeno but needed a second charge at Thames (Leaf).  Noticed that the Thames charger was grey in the app but not having encountered that before did not realise the significance!  On reaching Thames around 4:30 pm discovered that the one and only fast charger (Chargenet) was out of action.  I  gather it had been for about a week.  A BMW i3 also pulled up at the charger while they were there.  Brother did not have sufficient charge left to make it to Pauanui, nor to get back to Pokeno.  Searched around and located a shop where he could slow charge but by then it was just before 5 pm.   Shop(?) was about to close and understandably not able to help.  First petrol station they checked also could not help.  Eventually located another petrol station that provided access to a 3-pin plug.  Four hours sitting in their car to get to ~70% charge so rather late in the night before they got to their motel in Pauanui.  There they discovered the BMW i3 parked in the adjacent unit.  In that case though, the i3 had just sufficient juice left and were able to make it to Pauanui without charging at Thames.

Needless to say, brother now looking at options such as a used eTron etc.

At the moment, generally not that big of an issue except at free chargers. Of course, as more people buy EVs demand will increase. But at the same time, the range of the EVs is also increasing, which has the opposite effect. Long term, it's simply a question of installing more chargers to keep up - and that is happening, there are chargers going in all over the place at a decent rate.

I am joining the EV Road Trip in the South Island in October. I guess depending on the number and type of cars joining there could be some be some waiting around for one of the cars in the group to finish charging.

Shall be interesting experience anyway.

At the moment with a long range car you can (mostly) easily skip a charger or two, not so with a 24kwh leaf or something.

I've done this before when on a road trip and there has been an i3 or something charging (and this was on one of the worst routes). Most are free most of the time.

I enjoyed this video, and the frank honesty of it.

OT, I acknowledge, but I admit to having a (potentially irrational) serious dislike of this guy's videos - I watched a few the other week, having not come across him before, and came away not understanding the secret to his success. Am I an outlier with this view?

I know schmeeeee from way back before his channel (via pistonheads)  but I find him irritating at best and avoid his videos as he never has a valid point other than self promotion.

A lot of car youtube is just repeating stuff everyone already knows, but just loudly.

Yeah, but there's something about his delivery and seemingly innate smugness that makes his videos particularly annoying - to be boring and irritating at the same time is quite a feat!

And this is worth a watch too. JCB and them getting a conventional ICE engine (effectively) to run on Hydrogen. Not a fuel cell.

Its not as radical as they make out thou,

Gas  (both natural and LPG) have been burnt  in ICEs for along time even in NZ.. ( remember CNG)  and LPG is a certainly not common worldwide as a heavy bus/truck fuel

The problem still comes back to efficiencies, for a larger vehicle a large hydrogen tank is likely more economic over batteries, but for the light fleet the sweet spot for weight/power density is certainly in the Li battery court...

Re burning hydrogen, its a terrible idea for efficiency but then if you have limitless quantities of green hydrogen it should work (hint we dont).

1kg of h2 takes 44kwh to make, has 33kwh of energy, you loose 28% of that through compression and storage so that gets you 24kwh or so, and then you burn it at 30% efficiency , so get 7kwh or so of energy out of it...

luckily a car is just being made that doesn't need you to use an ipad to move the seats or turn on the wipers

I watched this earlier today, nice car. Does anyone know if the Kia EV6 is it's twin?

Yes indeed - "Today, we’re taking a look at two cars coming out of parent company Hyunda - the IONIQ 5 and the Kia EV6. Although both share a huge amount of DNA, especially under the skin, there are some differences between them. So we’re gonna dive into the details and see how these sister cars compare."

https://insideevs.com/features/508357/hyundai-ioniq5-kia-ev6-info/

I'm really looking forward to both these cars getting to NZ - will be two of the very few family-usuable BEVs* that, in lower-spec versions, will come in under $80k.

* By this I mean large enough to be suitable for my family of four including a teenager, and with a large enough boot to be able to use it on holiday.

Watched Autogefuel on the Ioniq 5 yesterday.

A decent car, quite large and spacious, the AWD one is pretty quick, the other not quite so (mid 8s for 0-100).

The cheapest in NZ will be just under the $80k limit and be the smaller 5xkwh battery.

Its not the most efficient (around polestar 2 levels) but charges like crazy if you can find a suitable fast charger.

The EV6 is more sporty looking with poorer rear headroom etc

I agree he is irritatingly smug but he has some very interesting points around operating costs in that video.
