For the past almost-3 years I've had a personal project, of sorts, that sees me take 360 VR images of DC fast chargers and posting them in a couple of EV-related Facbook groups ("NZ EV Owners" and "NZ EV 360 VR"). Facebook own Oculus, so they support the display of VR images fairly well.
The idea is that many EV chargers aren't immediately obvious when you arrive in an unfamiliar location and these images let you see the entire physical context of the charger you're interested in so you can more easily locate it and navigate to it on arrival. The idea came to me when I want to the Unison 50kw DC charger in Rotorua (at 1134 Haupapa St) for the first time. It's in a Council car park and not obvious from the road, which is divided by a boulevard down the middle.
Anyway.....over the last 2 years I've posted VR images (searchable, with tags) of about 80% of the DC fast chargers in NZ, including the majority on the South Island, too, but my Nissan LEAF's charging limitations and range meant that the most direct route to the ones further away from me wasn't consistent with what my LEAF could easily do. The battery heating issue in the LEAF (any LEAF) meant my effective range in a day was about 650km. That's usually heaps, but for a "360 VR safari" it was limiting.
But I have a Tesla Model 3 now.....with 4-5 times the range of my LEAF....and it was time to catch up with some of the missing chargers in south Taranaki and through the Ruapehu district....and the Tesla Supercharger in Palmy that I'd initially ignored because there were so few Teslas in NZ. There are now over 1,000.....and I own one....so the relevance of the superchargers is rapidly growing.
So on Wednesday this week I did a road trip from Opotiki, around the missing chargers in the target area, and then back to Opotiki. Here is a screen grab from my timeline from 6am to midnight. At the last minute, I'd also decided to get revised images of chargers I was passing but had already captured in 360 VR. This added about 10 minutes per extra stop. They added up. It was a long day. :-)
For anyone interested, the last new site (to me) was Opunake, south of Mt Taranaki on the coast. I charged the Model 3 to 90% there and drove the 232km to and along SH3 to Te Kuiti. Te Kuiti was a convenient place to make a decision about which route to follow from there. At Te Kuiti, I charged to 80% and drove the remaining 273km to Opotiki and arrived on about 17% about 3:30am. Long day. Red Bull for the win! It just under 1100km for the day...and the Model 3 didn't break a sweat. I didn't need to charge to 90% at Opunake. 70% would have been heaps and saved me 15 minutes. Next time. Opunake to Opotiki really only needed a single 20 minute charge at Te Kuiti to seal the deal. Compared to the LEAF, that's freedom sauce.
