I have no idea how insurance investigations work but say you have a non compliant plug, and your EV catches fire (who knows, Samsung might make cars in the future). Investigation finds non compliant plug but not the cause of fire, how will that look?

Ok so you say unlikely for EV to catch fire (I beg to differ but that's me), say there is a toaster in there and it catches fire, and there's that plug again - how would that look?

Anyone in a similar situation before?

I for one have heard of 2 people's homes burn down for the first time and insurance did not pay! Lots everything! [Did not get the full story though, so not sure what happened there]

If it wasn't the cause of the fire, only the shonkiest, worst insurance company would (try to) dodge the claim.

As for EVs catching fire....those fossil fuel laden cars are certainly flammable. Will the insurance company use a leak in the fuel line in the car in the car port to dodge a claim for a fire caused by a toaster?

That's the question you're effectively asking.

Tesla is something I am waiting for to launch in NZ.

Tesla has launched in NZ. Their store is open in Auckland and you can order Model S and X from their web site now.

But I guess you meant Model 3? Thats the one I am waiting for.

Such a bargain at $119,300.

Yes, its expensive. But you have to look at what it competes with. If you are looking at 0-100 KMH speeds. The base Tesla Model S does that @ 5.8 seconds. Which other cars can do that in the same size?

They are pretty expensive cars. Like the Audio A7 3 liter, higher spec engine BMW 7 series etc.

Tesla Model 3 is coming out for people who don't have $120K to throw around. It hasn't been made yet, but is already setting records for presale orders/deposits. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Model_3

You can buy a Renault Zoe ZE40 R90 from EV Central for $40,990. This car has 41kWh battery and 300km range - like the Tesla Model S 60 - for a fraction of the price.

I've driven a Zoe. They are slightly smaller than a LEAF, but I'm 6'4" and I'm sorely tempted to buy one of these. They can easily do Auckland to Tauranga with heaps of power to spare.

Yes, that would be a good choice. I found this YouTube review of the Zoe review to be quite helpful. Do you really think you can get a range of 300km from the Zoe, how have NZ Zoe owners found its range to be?

It will depend on how people drive and where they live. My LEAF has 200+ km range provided I'm mainly driving at or below 85kph most of the time. But once you move up to 100kph you can knock 10km off the range for every 10kph over 80kph. Then in the winter when it's 3C in the morning, knock another 15%-20% off unless you keep the car heated to at least 15C overnight. Li-ION batteries really hate being cold. They keep themselves warm when running, but keeping the car in an at least partially heated place would definitely help the range in the coldest weeks of the year. (Note: another Tesla feature is the ability to pre-heat your battery while plugged in before you drive the car. This improves the range...at the cost of a small amount of power from the house supply...and you're not heating the whole garage.....just the vehicle battery. You either set a timer or start it on-demand from your phone or in the vehicle.)

I'd say the Zoe 41kWh would probably reliably do at least 250km at 100kph. That's about 50% more than my LEAF will do at 100kph.....and I paid more for the LEAF. Granted, the LEAF is a larger, more comfortable car with great build quality.

Update: The UK Renault site have a range calculator. If you drive at 50mph (80kph) with ECO on, they say the range is 184 miles. But at 63mph (100kph) they say the range is 144miles (225km) and ECO isn't available. https://www.renault.co.uk/vehicles/new-vehicles/zoe-250/driving%20range.html

Just one more example of how wind resistance after 80kph chews through power. *Equally* true for petrol cars, too, of course. Also worth noting it's very unusual in NZ to be able to drive at higher speed for more than a handful of minutes. I drove from Auckland to Opotiki yesterday in my LEAF and there was always a camper or big truck or slow Nana who keep the speed much closer to 80-90kph on the open road.....if not less in places with hills....plus you go through a town every 10-15 minutes and the speed drops to 50kph-70kph.

Although weren't EV central talking about a bulk 30 car order of Zoes ?

When you look at the registration data at the MoT only 9 Zoes have been registered in the entire country...

Does anyone know when they are due to arrive?

Ask Steve Greenwood at EVCentral. He's the person actually bringing them in. Their web site says 30 but I think they are actually bringing in 50.....but 20 (edited for clarity) may have been pre-sold? Last number he said to me personally was 50....and I know there are some that have already been committed.

The EV Central Facebook page is tightly connected to Steve G's mobile. ;-)

Drag squares with speed. So at 50k you get drag and speed to your destination. At 100k that is twice the speed, but drag is four times as much. So while you still travel say 20km distance, your suffering 4 times the resistance to drive the same distance.

Do all electrics have the same phenomenal acceleration? I would think many people here would not have the patience to dawdle along behind a camper or big truck or nana if they could easily overtake. Of course they might run out of juice 20 kms further down the road.

Since I got my leaf I've not been bothered at all by slow drivers, since I know driving slow is actually good for my range, whereas usually I have a heavy right foot 😂
