My main gripes with the Lexus is that it's small and expensive for what it is, the range is too short, and it is a BEV built on an ICE platform. AND it it uses CHAdeMO for charging.

Not as bad as the mazda MX30 which isn't. But IMO the Lexus is about 3 years out of date in terms of range and technology. But probably a good run about for retired people that want a nice small luxury vehicle, and the reliability of toyota,  and the price difference between the EV and ICE versions isn't that large.

The new Toyota BZ4X looks interesting, but they would need to get it under 80k.

If you are shopping for a small luxury suv in NZ the lexus at the moment is sadly a stand out.

MX-30 is utter garbage, merc EQA is $7k+ more and doesnt get rebate, bmw ix3 is $115k, iPace/eqc/etron are like $150k?

The Ioniq 5 in top trim is pretty nice but thats over 100k

Pretty poor situation tbh.

seems like toyota going EV, a bit late to the party though. if Chinese EVs are successful they could really replace Japan as the dominant car maker

Too slow. 35% by 2030? Lexus to be all EV by 2033?

At least they are talking about change now, though they have done that before too.  So I remain vastly sceptical.

At least this ends talk about FCEVs

I'm very happy with my MG ZS EV. The range is Good Enough™ for every day use. The liquid cooling of the battery makes longer trips much less onerous than a LEAF.

I can drive Opotiki to Wellington in about 10 hours. That includes about 60-90 minutes of charging in several installments. On a longer trip like that I would stop several times anyway, no matter what I'm driving.

This is a case of learning it by living it. I've had a Tesla Model 3 Performance and done the same drive. I might save half an hour. But the Tesla costs more than twice as much.

The MG stands up well.

The thing I dislike about the MG is

- no heat pump

- high fuel consumption

- slow charging

ok, are

but apart from that it's ok

The Kia EV6 GT caught my eye yesterday.

I was holding out for the Tesla Y, but also going to explore the Kia option and take it for a test drive when released in NZ.

So Mevo are getting a government grant AND the $8650 rebate per vehicle? ($1.038M+)

I guess that’s 120 less subsidies for us plebs.

I was listening to a podcast involving an electrical supply expert in which he suggested that the current policy settings in NZ would result in the cost of electricity tripling in the next 5+ years. If that is the case then @ 12kWh/100km I would go from energy cost of an EV being 20% of my current hybrid to 60%. That is of course not factoring in any increase in liquid fuel cost. The numbers become worse when RUCs are considered in the equation.

I am determined to further electrify our fleet (only two cars) but am now beginning to wonder if some solar panels might need to be included in the mix. I know @LinuxLuver has a combo setup and would be interested to know how much of the energy from the Powerwalls is available for the house after running his car.

It would be nice if funds for this were limitless, but they’re not.

Great to see Toyota announcing a range of EVs. Better late to the party than sitting at home sulking.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a cap on the number of rebates available, so you can relax.

Enabling corperates to claim the subsidy means:

1) a larger and faster change to the fleet.

2) a more abundant supply of used (more affordable) EV's in future for those not in top income brackets.

Furthermore, when rental/lease companies have E.V.'s on offer, it increases EV exposure and enables people to sample the product without serious commitment first, and as most readers of this thread would know, once you go EV it is tough to go back to ICE.

Vast majority of NZ new cars are fleet purchases.  it would be stupid to exclude them, and they go onto the used market in 3-4 years usually.
