Shindig:

I was holding out for the Tesla Y, but also going to explore the Kia option and take it for a test drive when released in NZ.

I'm extremely pro-Hyundai but the 6 GT makes me wish there was an N option already for the Ioniq 5.

Yeah, I can't afford a new Model 3, but I'm pretty happy for a corporate to eat 30% depreciation on them so that I can afford one in a few years time, just as other people are happy for corporates to eat the depreciate on utes!  Just need to get EV's on the same FBT scale as utes and we'll see a big swing towards EV's.

Over 2 years in, 4000ish model 3s on the roads, only 5 on trademe , one is a crashed write off, one is going for over rrp.

No one seems to be eating that 30% depreciation at the moment.

I've always assumed most people own a new car for at least 4-6 years before trading it in for a new one.

Obraik: Another NZ rental company is buying Model 3. This time, 120 of them

I have organised a rental of the Model 3 after Christmas for a day :-)  Will take it up from Wellington to Martinborough to get a good idea of what it's like to drive on the flat and the hills (Rimutaka hill).

Not sure what model Go Rental has.

But it's going to take a lot of convincing for me to spring for $60K for the base model (after rebate) but it should be a fun trip.

As an aside the car I wouild really like is the Ionic 5 but at $72K that's out of reach.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

After reading this I thought that sounds like a good way to get to drive a 3, given at this point while I’m planning on ordering a Y I’ve obviously had no chance to drive one, and have only had a look over and drive in a 3 - but is $360 for a day really a typical cost for a car rental? (Seems pretty damn steep to me.) Are there any other rental options in Wgtn?

Batman:

The thing I dislike about the MG is

- no heat pump

- high fuel consumption

- slow charging

ok, are

but apart from that it's ok

A heat pump would be nice, but I rarely use the AC anyway.

The MG ZS EV isn't the most efficient EV, mainly due to its SUV shape. Every other car with a similar shape has the same issues. Bjørn Nyland got an average efficiency of 30kWh/100k from a similarly-shaped high end SUV....across 1000km. I've never seen my MG get even close to that level of wastage. Maybe 22kWh on a bad day. Usually it's around 18kWh on the highway.

DC charging speed is up to 80kw if you start low (10%?) but will decline from that rate after about 35%. The Hyperchargers at Bombay and Taupo see high charging speeds. Definitely not like a Tesla, though. But again ....much cheaper and I do 90% of my charging at home anyway. It's not worth the premium at this stage.

I will but another Tesla in the near future, but not right now. Their shares need to go up a bit more. ;-)

Its the SR+ LFP pack car.

New entry level 3 one would be very similar but a little bit slower with a bit more range

Dingbatt:

...I know @LinuxLuver has a combo setup and would be interested to know how much of the energy from the Powerwalls is available for the house after running his car.

It would be nice if funds for this were limitless, but they’re not.

My house uses about 300w as it's base level of usage. Water heating is at up to 3kw between 9-10, 1530-1700, 3-4. If necessary. The Bosch water cylinder usually gets hot within about 20 mins in each of those windows. So it's very efficient. We might use the dryer on a rainy day. So that's 2kw. For most of the year, the house only needs about 15kWh / 20kWh per day.

A solar system with 3kw of panels (so about 8 x 355w panels) could easily generate that each day for about half the year. That's a huge benefit for relatively modest cost. If you have a 5kWh battery - again, reasonable cost - you could keep the house running for up to 10 hours in an outage.

We don't drive that much these days. Covid. So I'm using about 10kWh per week for driving - about 60-70km of town driving, unless I go to Whakatane and back. Haven't done even that for a month.

In my own case, we have two Tesla Powerwalls and 28 solar panels. Right now, on a sunny day, I'm generating almost 75kWh in a day. I export most of it. About 80%.

The idea was that we be able to add 50km to the EV from batteries after dark in just over an hour, if we needed to. But the car is typically charged to 80% anyway already, so it was not a real need. But if we had a longer outage, then it would be very useful for the house and the EV.

I would recommend not overthinking it. Get some solar and a battery and use it to provide a buffer from those rising prices you're talking about. In my own case, over the last 4 years, my grid charges per kWh have fallen from 22c with Powershop to 16c with .Meridian (both in Auckland) and now to between 11c and 14.63c / kWh with Ecoticity in Opotiki. So even with solar, the cost of our grid power per kWh is down almost 35% in the past 4 years.

But with solar, or power bill last month was $20. That's for the house and the EV. It should be lower this month.

Solar and a battery will insulate - partially or fully - a home and car from higher grid charges. Plus, the lights stay on.

SR+ doesn't exist anymore, I thought. It's now just "Tesla Model 3".

Well it's not just for a test drive but for some fun also. I doubt you could actuallly be able to test drive a Tesla 3 for 24 hours and clock up that many km's.  There are cheaper options to be sure including driving my own car but the point was to drive the Model 3 for an extended distance and also have an outing at the same time.  I am not aware of any other rental companies that have the Model 3 in Wellington.

Nah, I totally get it and I'd have been interested in doing the same, but I'm just surprised at how expensive it is.

For my purposes, it could almost be cheaper to fly to Auckland and take a test drive from the Tesla showroom! Or is it fair to assume, based on the ever-mercurial behaviour of this company, do they no longer offer any way to test drive their cars?

They still offer test drives.

$300 a day is imo insane given the $60k purchase price and they have more expensive cars for half that price.
