Now that I'm back on the road for work I've been pondering the electrical question again. I have a 30 year old Honda Civic that probably gets very similar mileage to when it was new, it's a hoot to drive and I like having it in the garage (can't afford a Cayman or six cylinder M3).

But how will we look at electric? Will keeping cars long term even be a thing? Will someone own a Taycan for ten or twenty years and take it out to drive? Or will the battery thing mean they become like old laptops?

Or will we buy an EV, and they have some kind of lease where we can swap the battery or even the vehicle after five or ten years?

An EV with a large battery (75kwh +) will have 450km range at least. After 10 years it may have 60kWh available battery and 360km range at least. Assuming 80% capacity. So on a 600km trip you might have to spend an extra 20 minutes charging. Otherwise, the car is exactly the same.

The range is still more than adequate.

In 2031 I suspect replacement batteries (or parts thereof) will be far cheaper and it won't be an issue. Either way, the car is still awesome. It's still zero emissions.

I watched a video on the Toyota bz4X (below) - while apparently beauty is in the eye of the beholder and as superficial as this may be, personally I couldn't buy this car on looks alone. Those oversized black wheel arch surrounds. The overly fussy and ugly way the driver's display is attached to the dashboard. The shiny black plastic... It's also interesting that, for a dedicated EV platform, it doesn't have a fully flat floor in the rear passenger footwell. Here's the interior compared to a Model Y:

This is a pity, because I was a big fan, and was going to buy one in 2022.

Now I'm looking at the MG ZS EV.

Renault Zoe Fails Crash Test with ZERO Stars

The “new” Renault ZOE, a facelift introduced in 2020, received several battery improvements but no added safety. On the contrary, the seat-mounted side airbag which previously protected head and thorax has been replaced by a less effective thorax-only airbag, representing a degradation in occupant protection. The new ZOE offers poor protection in crashes overall, poor vulnerable road user protection and lacks meaningful crash avoidance technology, disqualifying it for any stars.

Zoe is an old platform they made worse by removing airbags.

Its going to be replaced by the R5 in 2023ish anyhow
