I don't know what the condition of cars and skill of drivers there but if it's all late model cars then 140 isn't a big problem on A roads

There are lots of drivers and tourists here who fail to negotiate bends on our state highway one when sober and dry.

no the pic should show the 1km over being pulled over, while 99.9% of those doing 51kph over (ie 151 and above) are not chased or even known about or bothered by

never mind bends, many nz drivers can't even get down a straight road without crashing.

ScuL: The speed limit is probably going to be the absolute hardest adjustment after our pending move to NZ.

With the legal speed limit in the UK being 70mph on motorways, and cops being very lenient where the first 10mph aren't effectively penalised, the average speed on UK motorways is well in excess of 130km/h. On a cheeky late night with little traffic it's absolutely not uncommon to drive between 140~150km/h. I do this on a weekly basis.

Getting to NZ speeds is going to feel like being in some kind of slow warp zone :D

I gotta admit, I feel that in Australia.  Almost every main road is somewhere between 60km/h and 70km/h, and every time I hit a 50km/h zone (narrow residential roads) or 40km/h (CBD or school zone) it feels like I could get out and walk faster.

Just because the police have fancy cars that have cruise, doesn't mean that we all do.
As a result, I am going to have to travel at 5km/hr under the limit since my 20 year old car probably doesn't have the most accurate speedo any more. In order to keep at this speed, I am going to have to watch the speedo for the entire drive and sit on my brakes as soon as I go over.

I'm going to a) piss myself off and b) piss everyone else off which makes driving no fun.

Wow you are a poor driver aren't you?

Can't regulate your speed without being ridiculous.

Maybe you need some more driver training?

Radar detectors are still legal.  Radar jammers are illegal.  There are some pre-installed jammers on cars from over-seas pop up on TradeMe every now and then.  They are usually on Audi, BMW and Lamborghini model vehicles though.

If you look hard enough you can still buy them in NZ.  Usually disguised as parking sensors, haha.

I believe the police have confirmed that there is no change to policy and that drivers won't be hounded for 1kmh over the speed limit. It's probably time to stop panicking about how you'll cope over Christmas when getting behind the wheel.
I was surprised that one person brought up the subject that I thought I was the only one who endorsed, and that was of driver retesting (and even more surprised he didn't get shot down in flames). Many of you on this site are IT professionals and are probably familiar with the constant retesting you have to do to keep your certifications current (CCNA, CWNA MCSE, etc). Why do you have to recertify? Is it because standards change, rules change, and technology changes? The same can be said for driving. Things have changed since you sat and passed your driver's test 10, 15, 25 years ago (be honest, how many of you indicate when leaving a roundabout, or just think "screw it, I'm going straight ahead and it's a stupid law anyway"...? How many hit the indicator while turning the wheel to change lanes, instead of giving it the 3 seconds first - after all, you had a look first and there was no one in the lane next to you...?). Yet we all think we're good drivers, and it's always someone else being an idiot on the road.
If you're such a good driver, why would resitting a test every 5 years be so abhorrent? It would certainly weed out some of the arrogance of people who seem to think that them being on the road is their right, granted back in the days of paper (or the ill-named 'lifetime') licences.

Before anyone says it - I know there is (at least) one huge hole in this idea - who would pay for it? Of course the answer always ends up being the end-user, but I don't think anyone would be happy to pay for what would just be seen by the cynics as yet another revenue gathering exercise, to do something that would probably be less popular than jury service. Another thing would be what seems to be the nearly impossible task of finding an impartial driving tester - some of the stories coming out recently about young drivers failing for the most ridiculous things would put anyone off endorsing retesting.
So, just an idea that will probably never see any light. But if your first reaction was negative (as I'll bet it was), really ask yourself, why? If you are as good as you think you are, then it shouldn't be a problem for you, and you'd finally see all the bad drivers getting some more training before being given back their licences and getting back on the roads they share with you.

If we brought in resitting the drivers test, those who complain in this thread about the speed limits being "revenue gathering" would then complain about "revenue gathering driving testing" with claims of how they are such good drivers that they shouldnt have to resit, it should be the others.

Its always amused me how in any driving discussion everyone always claims to be above average drivers and its the others who cause problems...

There is a name for it (which escapes me):

But basically the more knowledgeable a person is on a topic the more likely they are to understate their proficiency, with the reverse also being true.

Maybe this helps clear things up:

From http://www.police.govt.nz/news/commissioners-blog/safety-our-roads

Safety on our roads

1st December 2014
Commissioner Mike Bush

Ngā mihi. The coverage of our road policing Safer Summer campaign last week has caused some confusion around our strategy. In order to provide clarity, there is no "zero tolerance" strategy.  As always, staff will use their discretion when stopping motorists and issuing notices.

Please see the above link for the rest of the comment/blog from Commissioner Bush
