Cool

So no problems with wifi dropping?

And the lack of built-in screen not too big a hassle when you want to check footage?

Haven't had any issues with WiFi, but I don't ever connect it to my home access point or use any of the cloud features - just link to my phone if I want to check something or changes settings or pull the SD out and run it on my laptop!

Not been particularly frustrated with lack of screen either - It might be nice to have, but I think I prefer the smaller, neater form factor more than I desire a screen. YMMV! TBH I pay it very little attention now that the novelty has warn off. It pipes up when I start to tell me that it is recording and maybe once a month at most, I check a few captures and the firmware etc, but otherwise I trust it to do its thing without any help from me.

The only caveat I have is with the PowerMagic setup, insomuch as it works exactly as it is supposed to do, but the actual parked recording time I get with my current car battery before it cuts off is pretty limited so I end up not using it park mode more often than not. If I did it again, I would probably consider a proper battery pack. Maybe I just need to get a heftier car battery when I come to replace my current one!

Thanks.

One comment about the lack of screen is that if the camera gets bumped, it's more hassle to check that it's view is still optimal. I think I read earlier in this thread that you had it professionally installed though - so are the cameras pretty 'fixed' in position?

The mount is fixed with adhesive to the windscreen, the device sits completely behind my rearview mirror and the locking mechanism prevents it from rotating easily, so it doesn't really move/get bumped - I have no need to really touch it or come anywhere near it!

That said on the one occasion I took it off (car in shop for body repairs) it didn't take me very long to get it lined up again, but yes - I had to connect my phone to the "live-view" to make the adjustment. I was going to make a small mark on both the camera and the mount so that I didn't need to connect to it to get it back to the right position next time, but haven't got round to it yet!

My camera doesn't have a screen (DDPai M6+). If I bump it when cleaning the inside of the windscreen it takes less than 90 secs to connect my phone to the wifi and realign it using the live view on the phone. The added advantage of using your phone's screen for alignment is that you can walk around your car and see exactly when you walk into a blind spot.

I just bought a Xiaomi Yi Dashcam the other day to replace my failing POS that couldnt keep the date. So far so good. Does what it should, although the touted ADAS was HORRIBLE. It gave so many false-positives it was basically non-stop warning me of lane departures (on a suburban street...). That lasted literally about 3 minutes before I turned it off.

Aside from that... does what it should, and for $80, pretty happy.

I wonder how soon these camera systems will become standard fits by vehicle manufactures. I mean we now have in most small to large vehicles, cheap to expensive vehicles, reversing cameras. It would be no hassle at all to factory fit forward cameras, connect them up to the infotainment systems which would have an inbuilt SSD chip for recording and with the ability to either USB download or wireless download or even iCloud upload. The cost would be minimal to the manufacturer but initially expensive to the customer but still a great selling point at the car yard. As usual trickle down technology.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Cars with lane departure warning systems already have front cameras - seems like a good group of cars for manufacturers to start with implementing dashcam functionality.

Looking to get brand small SUV shortly, doing research & car yards rounds now, but my question is, would it be better to get the SUV selling car yard to install dash cam system or 3rd party ? and would the likes of DriverCam.co.nz who do at home installs be better or a bricks and mortar be better ? We are talking Tauranga.

Just updating this thread to say thanks for recommending Alex at drivercam.co.nz.

Alex installed a BlackVue DR750s 2 channel unit and a B-112 for Parking Mode, in my parent's car this morning.

Thanks Alex! A very tidy installation indeed.

Have you setup the Cloud on the Dr750s? Got mine about a month back and it doesn’t seem to want to reconnect to my home wifi when I get back. It seems to reconnect during the night (shortly after it’s scheduled daily reboot).

No, not yet. Probably won't bother with the cloud, for now at least.
