This is by means a political statement but I was talking to a friend about the BYD Atto 3 and he said it would never be sold in the US because of these perceived China practices   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-04-11/china-calls-charges-carmakers-have-ties-to-forced-labor-smears  and why is Ardern okay with this?

He lives in the US  and is driving a Chevy Bolt.

I didn't really have an answer.

China backing Russia in Ukraine is cause for pause for me.

NZ should look very closely at its reliance on China - or any other country - in case we are left in a position where our necessities cause us to sell out our core values.

I realize this isn't a new dilemma. We've never faced up to it in the past, as far as I know .... and the drop-shipping business community are the first to sell out.

It's a shame we make less here now than ever before. Muldoon was an arse, but he was the last to attempt to make NZ more self-reliant.

Arguably, he was the last, true 'national' party PM in any real sense. The rest - both parties - have been neo-liberal sell-outs.

But I'm not doing it alone. I own an MG made in Shanghai now and it probably won't be the last Chinese car I buy. Any Tesla delivered here comes from China. At least it's a conscious choice.

At the risk of continuing this OT sidetrack, the point of the article wasn't goods made in China but specific labour practices in Xinjiang

To quote from the article

"Horizon Advisory, a U.S.-based consultancy, said in a report last week that suppliers to BMW, GM and Volkswagen AG, and to China-based electric vehicle manufacturers including Nio Inc. and BYD Co., are linked to forced labor programs in Xinjiang."

So there were quite specific concerns, not all of China.

Be that as it may, I have plunked down my $1000 for the Atto 3 and the only thing that will change my mind is if I don't like it after the test drive.

It is indeed a fine looking car. A couple of reviews (from 3 months ago) have its real world range from the big battery at about 400km. But yes, a “Y” for someone who can’t cope with the Tesla aesthetic.

It doesn’t have a Frunk. But does have a driver’s display and an optional HUD.

I would suggest if it is ever available in NZ, it won’t be until 2024 at the earliest, and will probably cost $100K+.

How?

By going to the smart dealer - I live in GER. In China, the production is already sold out for 2022.

Something like

"But its OK for Warren Buffett to profit from owning around 8% of BYD ??"
