Batman:
is this our future? when will we have chargers in the South Island? so many German EVs .... and some fancy Chinese ones
Did you watch the video?
Bjørn shows a few photos of non-Teslas charging on Tesla Superchargers, most of them were behaving nicely and did their very best to park up to the charger so they wouldn't block other people from charging - and many of them had to do some pretty awkward parking to accomplish it. So I am not scared for the future based on the photos Bjørn shared.
There were a few exceptions of course, like the Porsche in the thumbnail for the video. Given how I have seen Porsche owners just "parking" wherever they want I am not that surprised at the positioning of the Porsche in the thumbnail across several chargers.

Batman:
I'm surprised US and UK haven't banned Chinese EVs for spying
Why is it any time the Chinese do anything cool or interesting, someone assumes they stole the idea? Newsflash - there are smart people outside The West as well.
I'm guessing Batman was referring to the ban on Huawei communications equipment for allegedly having Spy ware and back doors.

Not sure what you mean about "when will we have chargers in South Island"
These are the Chargenet Rapid chargers
.
nopt sure why i haven't seen them chargers!
norway has same population as NZ - 16,000 charging stations
NZ has about 300 chargenet ones and maybe the same number of Tesla ones
a bit of a chicken and egg story
the more the merrier!
i'm not sure if i'm counting charging stations or total chargers so my numbers could be off

For sure there some very smart people in China, however they do have "form" when it comes to "borrowing" IP. Just ask around our horticultural industry.
I remember an article a few years ago about one of the Chinese motor show where there were Chinese look a like Mercedes and RAV4's on display.
This article covers it pretty well. Not only do these cars look like their "twin" for some of them at least the parts are interchangeable. https://www.hotcars.com/22-chinese-copycat-cars-we-wouldnt-touch/
Take a look at the BYD S8 (Mercedes copy) , Landwing X7 (Range Rover copy) , Jonway UFO (RAV4 copy).
Based on what's happening geopolitically I think we need to be thinking very carefully about our dependence on China as a source of goods.

A bit like this

Fair, but borrowing a look is pretty tame, and also hardly restricted to China. The original Tesla Roadster is a near rip-off of the Lotus Elise.

I'm more thinking about the internals, which are the most important part. Electric cars have been around for over a hundred years; lithium batteries for thirty; variable-speed AC electric drives were undergraduate thesis topics when I did my electrical engineering degree 20 years ago.

Well I definitely agree with that anyway. :-)

jarledb: If you want a cheap EV from China the Atto 2 should be an interesting small hatchback that will probably be released sometime in 2023
That should probably come to about $30,000 NZD after the rebate here in NZ.

That's because Tesla bought the chassis from Lotus 😉
They didn't just copy-paste.

I think 2023 will be an interesting year for EV's -
BYD will have both Atto 3 variants here, standard and extended and if the 2 or 4 are also added into the mix, BYD could become quite the player locally.
Ora will have the Goodcat, not sure on the spec but I think the standard and the GT.
MG will finally have delivery of stock after the plant being closed. With the range still in the 300s, this may start to hurt sales as range envy kicks in against the better specced longer lasting Chinese cars.
Add into the mix Tesla, Hyundai, Kia etc with their slightly premium pricing over the chinese models and it will be a much broader market than it is now.
jonathan18:
That looks really interesting; while the interior is a little bit tacky (those silver airvents…), it’s way less polarising than the Atto 3, and the outside is kinda cute. That video mentioned that Aus (and therefore, I assume, NZ) will get the top spec of the versions being made in China, which has a much more acceptable level of power. Look forward to more details on this, including a realistic indication of range, and whether they’ll adjust the ride to be less squishy than the test car in that video.
Could well be a perfect replacement for my wife’s 2013 Leaf, given she doesn’t need a large car for around town (and this seems to have excellent room in the back; certainly far more generous than the Leaf, which I assume reflects its ICE origins).
hmm i'd never batted an eyelid on this before reading this but it seems it is quite a spacious urban mover!
that is good news

I just hope we can use Tesla chargers here one day. Everytime I go to the Countdown in Johonsonville I see a banks of Tesla super chargers all unoccupied and Johnsonville only has one public charging station at the library. I guess most people who own Tesla's either don't deign to shop at Countdown or have their groceries delivered from New World :-)
