kingdragonfly: Charging up a little at red lights does seem more practical than re-doing kilometers of road.

All road have to be-re-done one day.  But I imagine dedicated lanes e.g. bus ways would be the candidates initially.

Great idea but what cost? Then they break and need fixing. Why not have charging points in shopping centres, workplace car parks, car parks,. supermarkets etc. Where most cars live in daytime. Have  peak power billing that encourages off peak

 

Inductive/on-the-move charging in the road would be fantastic for long haul trucks and commercial vehicles that are on the road all day. You'd put it in strategic locations (to start with at least) such as long steep hills on SH1 - when the trucks would otherwise be using heaps of battery power, they instead get recharged and end up with more juice in their batteries.

Long term it would make road vehicles more like electric trains - unlimited range and no heavy/expensive/deteriorating batteries needed.

As an accompaniment to charging in the road, how does it work when there's only off street parking?  How do people with no garages charge cars over night?  Might not this be a use case for in road charging?

If you have off-street outdoor parking you could presumably still plug into an eternal outlet to charge.  Lots of commercial charging stations are reasonably al-fresco arrangements.

Got it.  There are some street in Nelson like that too.  It would be great for that situation if it was available in your street.  Or if you could ring the power company and request a charge pad be installed outside your address.  A charge pad in the driveway (powered from the house) wouldn't be bad either.  Saves mucking around with leads.

If they can chip a human (or a cat/dog) I'm sure a similar principal would work with a car.

Here's a BIG truck going electric. In fact, it generates more power than it uses.

At the recent EV World a guy on the Voltra stand told me about another underground electric truck that in the mine it was in, it re-genned more power going down the mine fully laden to the collection point than they used going back up the tunnel empty. They never had to charge the things.

Definitely cool, but there aren't many mines in the world where the spoil is taken downhill and the truck returns uphill (think underground). Still a great demonstrator of the advantages of electric transport!
