In regards to justification, it depends on what vehicle you're in the market for. If you're wanting to buy the cheapest new vehicle, then yeah there is still a gap between ICE and EV. If you're wanting to buy something more mid to high end then you start to find EVs for around the same price as an ICE. A Model 3 is around the same price as a BMW 3 Series, but is also within $10k of a Mazda 6. The Model Y is within around $10k of a CX8. A MG ZS EV and BYD Atto 3 are around the same price as a CX5.

Here is an interesting video on  different car's self parking mode. Cars compared were a Tesla S and 3, Mustang Mach-E, Audi and BMW.

Interestingly the Tesla did not win!

When I was testing EV and PHEV's the dealer tried to demo the self-parking mode of the Ford Escape but it never found a space even there was one and even when he stopped and tried to engage the parking mode it never went into that mode. Seeing the way it worked on the Mach-E I think was user error on the dealer side.

Still I think its a feature I would rarely use and not miss.

Yeah, had seen that video. Was not surprised that Tesla failed pretty good.

Still I think its a feature I would rarely use and not miss.

I would love that function if it was quick and safe, don't think any of the tested cars were quick enough to do the parking, especially the parallel parking.

That sounds like a good use case for an EV.

In my case I only do 10,000km per year and really only use the car for trips out of town. Plus I can't charge at home.

People need to really think about what suits their needs best. My plan is to buy another petrol car to get me through the next five years and then hopefully there will be some more affordable electric offerings from the mainstream Japanese and Korean marques.

You need to be extremely keen to own an EV without having home (or workplace) charging at the moment, or in the near future.

You would be picking from a limited range of fairly expensive car's. miss out on the two biggest win's of EV ownership. Cheap running costs from using cheap power to charge, & conveyance to leave home with a charge car every morning.

It would be quite possible a household that does under 300km of general running a week to pick a supermarket with a fast charger, and charge one car up at the same time as the weekly supermarket shop. This wouldn't be too inconvenient, but for me would mean going to the local new world, which is not my first pick. But you would still need to deal with waiting if the single charger was occupied, and whenever you go out of town.

Paid public charging isn't cheap. rates at that charger are 25c/min + 25c/kWh (works out to 62.5c/kWh at a 40kW charge rate). Take an EV using 16kWh/100km, and that's $10/100km. Basically the same fuel cost as a hybrid corolla sedan (4L/100km 91RON @ $2.60/L = $10.40/100km).

I am a strong advocate for EV's, but if you can't charge at home I would say, recommend picking a Toyota / Lexus Hybrid instead.

OK so Ford NZ are going to dip their toe into the EV market with the Mach-E

https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/129809093/ford-confirms-local-electric-mustang-mache-lineup

Although these are gonna remain pretty niche ( based on UK pricing)

The base in the UK is 50K (GBP) so i'm guessing somewhere around 100K NZD
- little to no chance of getting under the 80K  NZ clean car limit,

The AWD is 65K (GBP) so we are north of 120K NZD,

and the top end is 72k (GBP) north of 140K NZD...

For some people the rebate is not so relevant. When one of my rellies learnt i had bought an ATTO3 and would receive a $8625 rebate they asked how they could do that. Then they mentioned they had purchased a Mercedes EQC for $160K so the rebate didn't apply to them :-( Not sure if factored into their buying decision.

If my ship came home I would seriousy look at an EQS just for the cool factor :-)

I'd love to say had more honorable reasons to consider an EV, and there are many, but I'm too cheap not to take advantage of the New Zealand "Clean Car Discount."

But it's funny how the "70 percent of lottery winners end up bankrupt in just a few years" is an urban myth; though there's plenty of example of this happening.

National Endowment for Financial Education: Research Statistic on Financial Windfalls and Bankruptcy

Over the past couple of years several news organizations have attributed a statistic to the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) stating that 70 percent of lottery winners end up bankrupt in just a few years after receiving a large financial windfall.

This statistic is not backed by research from NEFE, nor can it be confirmed by the organization.

Frequent reporting—without validation from NEFE—has allowed this “stat” to survive online in perpetuity.

You can't really use UK pricing to determine NZ pricing. In the UK the RWD Model Y works out to be NZ$90k but here Tesla sells it for NZ$78k.

From what I had read previously, Ford intended to have one Mach-E SKU under the rebate value.

I guess I am a bit influenced by the fact the Ford dealer could not even get it to work in the Ford Escape we tested. But when the feature working on the Mach-E it looked cool but a bit slow.  I now find even just a reversing camera, my parking is so much better now.

Just looked up the EV6 Air LR price in the UK. GBP 44,195 on the road. (In NZ the EV6 Air LR just squeaks in under the $80k rebate cap, after recent price drop). So basically no chance of any Mach-E trim being rebate eligible.

No rebate will make the RWD Mach-E pretty unattractive compared the longer range / larger battery EV6, and the more powerful Tesla model Y. (Think the stuff article has an error with the acceleration time, other sources have this at 6.9s 0-100. 5.8s 0-97km/h in the article seems unworkable for a 198kW large car)

The above makes it an odd choice to bring the Standard Range RWD to NZ... If you are out of rebate territory, might was well bring the Long Range RWD instead, It's 610km WLTP range would be easy for the marketing team to hype. "NZ's longest range Electric SUV".... That one has a drool worthy 98.7kWh battery (91kWh usable).
