Harrys a bit of a dinosaur (but has decent insight) and we dont have the UKs charging network issues on the whole as its pretty much all chargenet (or superchargers)

honestly not sure I would want to rely on the UK's mess of fast chargers.

So, I was fortunate enough to be able to take an S out for an overnight last night. It's certainly a great car, and hard to believe they have been making cars for such a short period of time and have produced something so good..

As I suspected, it feels heavy, and as a result, it's less agile than say a 3 Series BMW or something else in it's class, but it's on par with the Series 5, which is more the vehicle it's pitched against.

Having said that, it handles exceptionally well considering those factors, and has many great features to offset the fact it is *slightly* less manoeuvrable. I certainly wouldn't say it's a land yacht.

Colour me impressed.

I think my view of the S is a bit biased from the 3 since I prefer its smaller, nimble feel. I haven't driven a "modern" S though...the last one I drove was a 2014 version I hired for a few nights while I was in the US a couple years ago. The S was also out of my price range.

Was this overnight test drive from Tesla? Did they give you the performance variant?

Yes, it was overnight and no it wasn't the performance, which is good, since I don't have the budget to buy one anyway :)

I agree about the 3 being smaller and more nimble, however, for whatever reason, the boot capacity is severely reduced due to a pretty small "opening" gap. It may be fine for some people, but with 2 kids and lots of sports gear etc, no matter how we sliced it, it was going to be a significant issue.

Yeah, large amounts of storage isn't a big deal for me since it's just my partner and I with no kids in our future. I have had the boot fully packed on a few trips where it was full of a few suit cases, audio/visual gear my partner was taking for work at our holiday destination and an escooter. I was surprised by how much it could fit but obviously everyone's requirements are different. Have you had a 3 out on an extended test drive? You could always see if they'd let you do the same with one and then do a load test with it to see if you could fit your worse case haul.

I apologise, my tone probably reflected what I have felt is an overarching judgy (If you don't buy an EV you are stupid/don't care about the planet) vibe I often sense in this thread (and other EV threads too). I apologise if I misread.

I would be keen to see what evidence you used to make your decision, thank you. Part of what makes it a bit more difficult from my perspective, is that the car I want doesn't exist (high performance EV Wagon). I keep wondering, if I just buy something else and hope what I want is available next time around.

The information I had seen recently (though I can't find it right now), is that the size battery the Tesla S uses, cost the same in CO2 emissions as an ICE vehicle would use in it's first 130K+ of KM's driven (Sorry, the exact numbers I can't find this second). Obviously, this doesn't account for the extra KM's after this, but it was a surprise to me. I guess short of a bike, there will be a compromise to make. Oil is dirty to extract and transport, and obviously in NZ we do use a fair amount of renewable energy too, but ICE vehicles get more and more efficient all the time as well.

Have now found some time to provide some references for you.

For me this issue has never been about the $cost - it is about trying to take some action relating to the climate crisis we are facing. My conclusion is that moving transport from gas to electricity is going to make a contribution. After having an EV for 3 years and driving nearly 50,000km I haven't found any downside to my decision to make the change.

For me it was environmental and political (?reduce support dodgy countries maybe), and technological.

Close friends in chch have had evs for 7byears and had only good stories to tell.

Our leaf was going to be second car so no worries about long trips, although have driven dunedin to chch and dunedin to wanaka. ( you have to be keen).

No regrets at all after 3 years. Lovely driving experience. Has become the preferred car.

Other half has already decreed that we are only buying evs from now.

Theres a few pre-configured model 3's on the nz website now if you are keen and dont want to wait.

Prices are a fair bit higher than at launch though.

Model 3 driver fined in Germany for using touch screen controls

Tesla's touchscreen car controls should be treated as a distracting electronic device, a German court has decided.

A driver found himself facing a road ban after being involved in a crash in the rain.

The Tesla automatically started its wipers - but manually controlling the speed was done through the large central touchscreen, rather than a lever on the steering wheel.

The driver was punished under the same rules as using a phone while driving.
