SH1 in Puhoi is tolled and has been for a decade. Why are Wellingtonians so precious?

And on a public holiday weekend it's the cheapest parking in Auckland.

The story of a motorist. A tale of taxation.

You leave school start working and decide to get your licence. You take many lessons that are taxed. With your earnings on which you are taxed you save hard for a car and pay tax on the saving of the money that you have already paid tax on. You go for your licence and pay a fee which is taxed.

Then the day arrives that you can buy your car which you pay tax on. The registration is done and a tax is charged on that tax. You insure your pride and joy and pay tax on that. You joyfully start to drive and in a few days you need to fill your car with petrol for which you pay taxes, levies that have taxes added, excises that has tax added so pay taxes on taxes. You drive to town and park your car for which you pay taxes.

Then each year or so you renew your registration with taxes on taxes. Renew your warrant of fitness and pay taxes and pay your insurance and pay taxes.

And now you decide to travel and you pay taxes on your fuel. Pay tolls plus taxes to travel certain kilometres, pay a regional levy which you pay a tax on that tax. You stop and have some lunch and ponder that your relaxing trip from is being hit by at least eight taxes and wonder should I stayed at home or would they tax that too.

Then you hear that they want to charge you more toll and levies and surcharges and excises because you are apparently driving on the road for free.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I think of tax as a donation, as well as investment in our future, and hate companies that don't pay their fair share of it. Just frustrates me when I see my tax dollars wasted on things like reviews, red tape, lack of common sense stuff etc..

Tip, try and discuss without being snotty.

SH1, runs right through the centre of Wellington from the planes north and south. It is the main route for trade for ALL NZ so any additional costs added at Wellington will affect prices for ALL NZ.

Again, there is a toll road in North Auckland on SH1. For all intents and purposes, it is the same road. I'm asking what makes Wellington special, given that trucks filling up in Auckland (also the main economic centre of the country) are subjected to a regional fuel tax; solely in place because the Govt didn't want to pay Auckland back for the decades they stripped out more than they put back in.

IMO the current road is not really fit for purpose for the 21st century, as it used to have heaps of deadly crashes before they eventually put in a wire a barrier rope. It is very narrow and windy, so IMO it has really had its day. As I said before, tolling essential SH1 roads is going to become a class thing, where the rich will drive on the nice new safe faster route, while the poor will be using the old poormans road.

Wasn't it always going to be a toll road?

I lived in the Kapiti area until 2004 and there never was any serious discussion of it not being a toll road......at least for the first few years.

Easily avoided for most people's daily drive.

I have no idea why people insist on paying petrol tax for the daily commute.

Fine....pay it for towing the boat or going to the ski fields or whatever other occasional special case means you have to waste several thousand dollars / year when not doing those things....

As I also have an electric lawn mower I don't buy petrol at all. Not even a little bit.

For anyone currently driving a $10K+ car less then 80km / day........there is no need to be paying petrol tax.

I lived in the Kapiti area until 2004 and there never was any serious discussion of it not being a toll road......at least for the first few years.

People do seem to be using that argument, as a way to justify it being a toll road. But I don't think back in 2004 there were any real toll roads still in existance in NZ, apart from maybe the odd small bridge. Plus one reason for getting it was to replace the current bad road which has killed many in the past.

The Auckland harbour bridge used to be tolled, but they eventually removed that, even though I beleiive it was more than paid for by the time it was removed.

The thing is initially when it was discussed and priced, it was well over 1 billion over a decade ago, which maybe where tolls were discussed to pay for it. Somehow they managed get it re-quoted and build it for under a billion in todays dollars, which doesn't sound that much compared to other projects these days. If they have used a PPP to pay for it, those people who have invested in it will want a reasonable return, so we may end up paying more as a result. I don't think PPPs are the best idea, the government may has well just borrow themselves.

It was - simply because nobody wanted to fund the road due to the cost and lack of real business case which meant it failed the criteria for full funding.

It was then funded by National and built as a PPP project because it was deemed a national road of significance and too important to not have, and the toll largely abandoned because it was unlikely to work as the time savings simply don't stack up, and large vehicles such as trucks are unlikely to use the road due to the terrain.

Agree. Tax is the Govt revenue stream. It pays the bills. Its no issue if the populous decided they want reduced taxes, fine, that can be done. But they cannot then complain about a lack of services or infrastructure getting old

Where should they put them?

It is not just drivers of cars(petrol powered), trucks and motorbikes that benefit from our transport infrastructure but they are the one taking the hit for it. The costs are being unfairly levied.

If we keep pilling on more taxes we run the risk of wrecking our economy by taxing it into recession and currently the new taxes, sorry levies and excise just keep on coming. If you and I cannot afford something then we simply don't buy it, over taxing generations to come is simply wrong.

Now in this thread we are talking about a toll, okay lets park that name right now, it's a new tax on which we will pay a tax and this is to pay for something that we paid twice thrice and thrice times thrice for. Oh and a point here how will they collect the toll/tax from the cyclist?
