I have a nice advantage of running 70km/day (350km/week) which helps the savings on fuel by quite a bit while being comfortably within the available range of my 2015 Leaf's 24kWh battery. My Leaf works great for the 70km return trip but my next EV will be more convenient for the longer drives where I'll be able to drive for up to 4 hours before making a stop for charging and eating and the call of nature.

You have a 4 hour bladder? Where can I get one those?

My bladder and my LEAF were made for each other.....about 90 mins / 2 hours. Maybe I should drink less coffee. :-)

In Western Australia last week I drove 5 hours each way to Albany from Perth in a KIA something. I still stopped every 90 mins or so just to stretch my legs and stand up. Made me realise how much I actually enjoy the LEAF driving style.......and still do it because it's better for me and my head to take a break.......not because I have to.

At least today it would, maybe in 5 years the batteries will be much cheaper and have more capacity.

Note that 12 bars is anywhere from 85% to 100% (inclusive). After that each bar is about 6.25%.

Also.....we can now order individual LEAF battery components via Alibaba. I have no ida if these are dodgy or not.....but at US$120 / each if you only needed to replace a couple of bad cells in the pack, this might be the way to go.

This gave me peace of mind till I came across a message here from Linuxluver about an Auckland to Wellington trip. The Cambridge-Taupo leg was "horrendous" apparently, even for an experienced EV driver using all the tricks like trailing behind big trucks (ugh!!).

The planned fast chargers at Tirau and Tokoroa are still not in place -- just hoped for "by the end of the year", same as they were in 2016 I believe.

Has anyone else here besides Linuxluver tackled the Cambridge-Taupo journey in a 30kWh LEAF and what was their experience please? Should I be banking on the chance of a successful expedition in early November in my near-new LEAF? What pre-arrangements can be made to avert disappointment and huge inconvenience? What do you do if you run out of charge when the surrounding terrain is nothing but forestry blocks?

Until the Tokoroa charger is in place, I'd recommend going from Cambridge via Rotorua southbound to Taupo. It's slightly longer, but the hops remove all doubt of success.

I've also done Te Awamutu to Taupo....and arrived on 14%. But it was a fine, clear day with little wind....and the back highway from Te Awamutu was almost empty and I drove at 80kph for most of it. Range REALLY increases if you stay closer to 80kph. An empty road is great for that.

The chargers will probably be in place by the end of the year. Charge.Net just got a pile of money from EECA for chargers.....and unless they are overwhelmed by the volume of work, Tokoroa should be a go. Steve West asked me how Cambridge to Taupo went....and I told him....and he said Tokoroa looked to be necessary.

Taupo to Cambridge was easy. It's downhill. I arrived with over 20%. I did 100kph for almost all of it....sometimes more on the longer downhills. Here's a concept - surrender to the uphills (go slower) and win the downhills (go faster....assuming they are straight).

The o ou reason we have t done ours yet is my wife is too scared for anyone to open the dash as we bought a ‘mint’ ex-Japanese one and she’s loving the ‘new car’ feel we last had 10 years ago ☺️

I've had problems getting Li-Ion batteries from China even though I'm OK with waiting many weeks for slow delivery, they last time I had to complain until I got a refund because the goods never showed up. The last Li-Ion cells I bought were from the US and even then I had to order from a company that new how to jump through the right hoops to get them shipped. There was a plane that crashed due to a suspected Li-Ion battery fire, ever since then the shipping of LI-Ion batteries has become VERY difficult. I have ordered from several Chinese sellers in the past, but now if I try to add batteries to my cart I see the message "no shipping option for your country" and that happens even with companies with a very long list of possible shipping choices.

I wonder how come they can ship cars full of them then too?

Must be ‘ship’ shipping is ok for these? I wonder why they can’t ship smaller parcels via ship lines then? Especially since they take up to 3 months for AliExpress orders at times anyway?

Good point about the ship. Have one section for flammable if catch fire pull the lever everything drops into the sea, problem solved.

Some carriers will ship batteries that are inside a device but not individual cells, some wont ship anything that contains a Li-Ion battery. Apparently from China to Australia is doable by Australian Post, but you can't get a package from China to NZ with them. Some China to USA couriers exist, but can't ship to NZ with them. It seems that China to NZ is more of a problem than for most countries to most other countries.

I have been able to buy an power bank from China, but couldn't order a different power bank from the same seller because they can't ship to my country - I'm wondering why they were able to send me the other one then! The China-NZ shipping hassles can be a bit frustrating at times!

I've gone to send a package from the US to NZ and with some carriers they wanted a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) so I looked through all the options to find a carrier that didn't require the MSDS. One seller in the US will happily send overseas for a price, they do fill out the MSDS and I think they discharge the cells to 40% (I'm going by memory here, I could have the % wrong) to make the carrier happy.

That makes sense. Most cells are just below half when you buy the item.

They suspect a shipment of li-ion batteries on Malaysian Airlines MH370 was possible cause of the flight disaappearing. Plus, in the new Dreamliner 787s there were some early Li-Ion battery fires that caused the planes to be grounded for literally months until they sorted it out. Understandable.....an extremely hot battery fire 4 hours from land is a extremely hazardous situation......and avoidable if you just don't carry or use the batteries. Put them on a boat.

Many aware that I was IS/IT Change Manager in leading New Zealand Telco companies - hence every job is done with "Back out plan" in place, back up files are saved and if the need be - your Japanese could be restored on yours or another clsuter. And if you bought the car with damaged cluster - we have spare clusters which we can program into English ...

P.S. I look at Geekzone only when in front of PC - as right now during brief lunch break and in between Jap 2 Eng conversions - just done few this morning and heading into the CBD to do another....

I was considering a Leaf as a third vehicle for city use, given that 99.9% seem to be imported I really don't want the hassle of trying to either translate or recode the dashboard. It seems to me to be giant pain in the proverbial
