Yeap, sure is.

You can't ship motor oil or petrol by air either, but it is OK to drive around with 50 litres of petrol under your seat and 5 litres of hot oil behind your front bumper.

Batteries are safer than a tank of petrol because they hold substantially less (stored) heat energy and don't spread flaming liquids all over the road after a crash. Ruptured fuel tanks kill dozens of motorists every year, but no ones freaking out about it.

Re: batteries some people have bought Li and other traction batteries from PRC with different level of satisfaction - from "cheap and working" to "actually ended up to be not cheap at all (customs fees, tax, shipment) and not working"..

Buy from Japan or Korea - at least quality is good.

Between my day post and this post - I have traveled to CBD and converted one fresh import from Jap to Eng in a few minutes. So Instrument Cluster (AKA Dash) is fast and non-intrusive - no removal required as from yesterday...

As for the AV unit - physical swap of Jap unit to USA one is a matter of few minutes as well. The issue here is that after I published my report on it been 100% compatible (pin-outs) - couple of years ago - those have disappeared from wreck yards in USA :-) as all of a sudden people started hunting for them. And it is not cheap to source one now.

P.S. on a slow burner - working on "lost SD card" solution. Those seems to disappear in transit sometimes...

Hi,

I've been skulking around in the background for a few weeks, reading the previous 65 pages here and info from various other sites. I've learnt a fair bit - thanks people! ;)

Would anyone like to comment on this Leaf Spy report? It's from a 2014 S 24kWh that I am interested in (mostly for the 10 airbags it has). Very few KM's driven - could that be an issue?

It's not that bad. My first LEAF had Japanese and I just used Google Translate to do the one-time changes like date and time. You soon get used to it. Each "icon" has a wee symbol that is fairly obvious as to what it means....and if it isn't you just touch it and decide for yourself whether or not it looks useful.

That said, it's now easy to convert the dash options to English...and that is useful. This wasn't an option just 3-4 months ago.

The whole thing is "curious". A 3 year old car with only 594 km and 28 quick charges and 5 slow charges. What has it been doing for the past 3 years?

On the other hand, it may just be neglected and you may well be able to get that 95% SoH back to 100% just by driving the car for a couple of hours each day for a week and "exercising" it with some fast charging and slow-charge top-ups. Those battery temps look to be optimum....(27C). AHr is pretty good.....may be a bit low because the car is "flabby".

In 4 hours today I got the SoH of the Manukau Nissan courtesy LEAF to rise from 81% to 82%. Given a couple more days I might have reached 85%. :-)

As long as you're confident the car hasn't been reset then driven for a month or three.....it looks good. Who is the vendor?

Cockram Nissan said same thing, albeit trying to get manufacturer to drop the price to compete with dropping 2nd hand prices. No specifics otherwise.
How much would you pay for a 2018 40kWh Leaf?

The same price as ICE model of equivalent spec. Bearing in mind, the range of the ICE will be the same forever. The range of the EV will decrease over time (depending on how much you use it of course - use more, decline faster).

So here's something I'm still trying to wrap my head around. Using a cable is just using the internal charger in the car but if you use a wall charger are you using that instead?
So as I've said my family have installed a juice box pro 40, which is meant to be a 40 amp charger. Can the leaf benefit properly from that it would just end up down charging to its internal 3.3kw charger?

Also is anyone just getting by on trickle charger and public charging stations or is a home installed charger a must?

No idea. They may well be waiting until after the election to see who wins before they finally decide to sell them or not.....based on any promises of incentives that would help them match 2nd-hand imports from countries with incentives.

I know there are now vendors in NZ ordering NEW electric cars overseas...waiting the 6 months to get the incentive..then shipping them here. The lower price from the larger market WITH incentives on top makes it very hard for the local dealers to compete unless they also have some kind of tax credit or rebate to reduce the local price. ...understandable.

It's not a 40 charger, it's a 40amp power supply which the car uses to power it's internal charger. If the car charger can't take more than 20A it's overkill but might be useful for next car.
(one of reasons I bought my UK leaf which can draw 6.6kw close to 32A - but not actually used it as drawing 16A via caravan plug is good enough for me)

There are I think home rapid chargers using 25kw or smaller into the CHAdeMO port but that's another issue..

Whether charging just from wall socket (10a) is effective way to charge you leaf comes down to home much you drive the car each day vrs how long it takes to charge it. For the first 8 weeks I had my leaf I charged it from a normal wall socket in garage. Ie home by 6pm and just left it slow charging over night and always full in morning but my km are low)
If you already have the juice 40 then you know you are charging at Max for your current car.
