You can't ship motor oil or petrol by air either, but it is OK to drive around with 50 litres of petrol under your seat and 5 litres of hot oil behind your front bumper.
Batteries are safer than a tank of petrol because they hold substantially less (stored) heat energy and don't spread flaming liquids all over the road after a crash. Ruptured fuel tanks kill dozens of motorists every year, but no ones freaking out about it.
