I see that the Kapiti Expressway may be opened as early as the end of 2016. That should be good for that section of the coast.

Current target is apparently mid December, it will be a huge improvement for that area, esp the township areas of Paraparaumu and Waikanae, which turn into slow moving carparks during the holiday periods...

A section of SH2 called Manawatu Hill.

Over the weekend, a father and his son were killed when their truck went through the barrier and down a bank.

This particular stretch of road has been on the radar to be realigned since at least 2006 and keeps being continually deferred. In 2017, it still doesn't have a confirmed start date. Hopefully the deaths of two people will at least help it become a higher priority.

Im tired of watching the government put minimal effort into the main highways, They are all run down and require re stabilizing which is a huge job. The surfaces are terrible and change every 500M. Corners are off camber and in some cases unstable.

My old man said a few years ago, Why dont they just get a huge work gang in from china to smash out the highways in one hit over the next 2 or so years. Instead of doing a 1KM add on every 5 years.

But if one was to want their country to grow to a level where they can take that tax as everyone is more efficient and there is not as much human resource wasted sitting in traffic each day they must take action to facilitate that growth. You tell me how many wasted hours are sitting in Auckland traffic each day? Or the lost productivity due to highways that you can only pass at a lower speed or has bottle necks. Do the math, How much could the country produce with the time spent in traffic each day.
Im no expert but id see future proofing a good idea for our main highways. The south island is only completely crippled due to terrible roads and infrastructure.

Make "work for the dole" mandatory after a 6 month grace period, and redirect the existing PD/Community work crews to road building, maybe adding in a bunch of Home Detention and low security prisoners too. Instant labour pool.

They don't have the skills. Roads aren't built with hand tools any more. They are built with machinery and that require trained and skilled operators. I hired small digger once. It gave me whole new appreciation for how much skill is involved.

Hmmm, Rough call to make but... Im sure a decent portion of our prison population and beneficiaries have worked with earth moving equipment and on roads. There are basic jobs that can be replaced by these workers and other people who want to succeed given the opportunity.

If I had to make a list of improvements or new roads, this would be mine:

* Complete the current Roads of National Significance projects, which I believe have all been funded

* Straighten the route on the northern end of the Desert Road, the 3 valleys with the tight 20km/h corners (maybe put bridges over them?)

* Find a new route just north of Motutere (by lake taupo) to avoid the real tight bends where there is a cliff that falls into Lake Taupo. Think more than 1 truck has fallen off there

* Make Sh2 from Wellington an expressway all the way to featherston which would include a road tunnel under the Rimutaka ranges. Wellington needs more land for housing and there is plenty of supply over there plus the current route is vulnerable to accidents, high wind and snow. Intersections at Melling and Avalon would become interchanges like they are building at the bottom of the Hayward Hills

* Build a new road directly north of Sanson that meets up with Sh1 to avoid Bulls

Assuming going into the future we end up with more and more cars on the road, maybe consider designating all of State highway 1 between Whangarei and Wellington as Expressway/Motorway, I remember the Auckland motorway only running between Sunset Road on the North Shore of Auckland and the foot of the Bombay Hills, now look how big it is.

My only worry is if we have a change of Government this year that involves the Green Party, its known how anti-roads they are and they would try to stop all current roading projects including any future ones hence I hope current projects like Transmission Gully and the Peka Peka to Otaki expressway are all sunk costs that they can't get out of.

By 2020, Transmission Gully motorway and the Peka Peka to Otaki expressway are expected to be opened.

Today NZTA put out its shortlist of proposed routs for the Otaki to Levin expressway. This part can't come soon enough, the current road south of Levin is a PoS. One of the awful railway overbridges just north of Manakau was blocked by a truck accident for hours today. It's unbelievable there's not an alternative road at all to bypass SH1 in this area. Not even a farm track!
