A neighbour has a car with an exhaust you hear from a block away.

I don't get how they get the WOF.

It wasn't so much of a problem until recently when this guy starts working on his car each evening, revving it up and down, driving down the street and returning etc.

Noise control say they don't do cars, police won't do anything (i emailed them and they did not reply).

I guess this guy just quietens the exhaust before getting each WOF.

Basically we have noisy exhaust laws which cannot be enforced.

I know two people ( 1 colleague,1 family ) that had their cars stickered due to excessive exhaust noise

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

You can get variable exhausts with an adjustable butterfly in the middle to adjust flow/noise. It's a simple click of a button, you don't even need to be inside the car to change it either. It's still illegal, but it's not like your average VTNZ inspector is going to notice that your stock catalytic converter has been gutted and you have a special exhaust.

They arn't my "mates". I know them. So far, I haven't had a car I needed a dodgy warrant on. Just spent 1200 on new brakes, calipers, pads, fluids and exhaust welding on my 97 Corolla SE. But if I ever did have a project car I needed a WOF for, I could certainly get one of my "mates" to get it a WOF minus cat, muffler, engine swap/bucket seat certification and adjustable suspension cert.

How do you think the kids afford that stuff otherwise?

Our neighbour seems to be able to get away with it somehow.

Nothing like it in NZ, and the police don't seem keen to act on tipoffs.

The neigbours car seems to have some higher compression motor as it will cutout when idling. So, when he starts the car he sits there revving the engine to prevent it from stopping.

Big cams, or a rotary. It's probably set up for daily and track use. He will have a 3 inch pipe coming straight out of the manifold with nothing in between, I bet ya'. Go and ask him as a "car enthusiast" one day and see. I'm sure he will tell you, haha.

Also, there is a legal dB threshold your exhaust can be too. The law could probably do with a tweak, but it could be that your neighbor is within his limits too.

Even track use requires some noise reduction.

In my teens I had a particularly good muffler made of thick wall aluminum. I don't know what it was originally fitted to but it ended up on several of my cars. Why advertise that you may be speeding?

surfisup1000: I was following a cop going 95kph on the open road the other day.

We crossed into a 300 metre 70kph zone (due to roadworks), and the cop just sails on through at 95kph, 25kph above the limit. I dropped my speed to 70kph and it was very obvious the cop just went through at 95kph. Do as I say, not as I do I guess.

Speaking of road works, what about the times they put up the road work reduced speed signs but there are no visible road works.

"Hi, there is a car in front of me doing nearly 100 through an area of roadworks with a posted limit of 70kmph"

"What is the number plate of the speeding vehicle please?"

Of course not - the National Policing Policy is all about revenue collection, so revenue collection is a much high priority in the National Policing Policy than things like public service or solving crime!!

It's a real shame, as once upon a time the police did solve crimes and perform public services. (Yes I know they still do these, but it is very hard to get an officer to attend anything these days unless there is a weapon involved or someones life if in danger, whereas in the past they would have attended many incidents)

And don't get me started on officers discretion! The number of women I know who've got being ticketed for excessive speed - 15+ km/h over the limit, but because they've used their feminine charms. That is a major part of the problem - a complete lack of consistancy, and therefore people don't know where they stand.

There have been statements that despite the "Zero Tolerance" campaign speed cameras still used a 4km tolerance. Was the ticket for doing 102 with a trailer or in roadworks? What was the fine?

Unless she was in a lower speed zone or towing a trailer, that would be categorized as a load of old bollocks. Speed cameras use a 4km/h tolerance (use to be 10). If towing she was 12km/h over, or worse if it was a lower speed zone, in which case she deserved it. Also Police don't use hidden cameras anymore. Vans must be visible from 50m away.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
