lower speed limits on high risk roads

Yip, apparently new motorways with both directions separated, good lighting, well maintained surfaces, good visibility along the route, pretty straight-ish, etc are considered "high risk" and have their speed limits capped to 80 kph (one recent new/upgraded motorway junction comes to mind). Meanwhile I refuse to drive anywhere near 100kph on plenty of roads signposted with 100 kph limits that have no separation between directions, no lighting, surfaces full of potholes and faded lines, poor visbility and/or plenty of sharp curves (including 90-degree curves with 100 kph signs literally only a few meters before the entrance—more common than I think should be the case).

When I see awfully maintained roads signposted at 100 and well maintained roads signposted at 80, I have good cause to question how the speed limits are arrived at. I don't think I can even give the authorities the benefit of the doubt that the speed limits are calculated based on safety...

Very late to the party I know, but one thing I *really* like about the tomtom GPS unit I have is the ability to play a tune if you exceed the current speed limit.  I have mine set for about 5 kph over.  I use that functionality far more than for actual directions.  This does require the system to be up to date with the roading, and doesn't work for roadwork areas.

Traveling one dark night a few years ago I was being good but a bad man wasn't.  When he overtook me at the legal speed limit + 30kph I knew I had to emergency brake immediately.  I was using a radar detector that was seeing a serious road hazard ahead.  The bad mans lights disappeared in a cloud of tyre smoke as he struggled to save his license. He had reacted to the car parked ahead, park lights on, in the middle of nowhere to improve the ticket sales for the shift.  Not much to do with safety.

Him, me, or it.

I believe you have that back-to-front. Lasers are the hand-held devices you see the cop's looking through, zapping approaching cars with. Narrow laser beam and rifle like aiming scope enables the cop's to single out a car at a long distance, in a group and measure it's speed. Radar is bit more broad beamed and can not reliably singe out 1 car in group at long distance - one of the reasons the old mobile (radar) speed camera's didn't issued tickets when two or more moving vehicles were in the photo (I'm sure that saved me $$ a couple of times). Unsure what technology is in the new camera's.

That's no longer true (depending what you mean by long distance). The current cop radars can distinguish the lead car in a group from the second and I think maybe that from the third. I suspect it does this by looking at the times between a radar pulse and the various returns.

not i  :)

i mean laser guns are used in a stationary position (eg. cop hiding in the bushes) not mobile as on a moving motor bike.

Don't understand the problem with this. Makes sense to me if bike cop carries laser (easy to do), stops briefly, conducts a few speed checks, moves on. Where does the idea come from that a hand-held laser has to be incompatible with transport by motorcycle? This actually strikes me as a clever way to do it, since the cop can easily change location to circumvent warnings being circulated.

not incompatible with transport to site by motorbike but not used on a moving motor bike.
