I so still prefer a toll to any sort of petrol levies. Agree with all that you stated, this government needs to be careful of what its doing to our economy.
@Linuxluver I really like EV's but right now they would simply be a very stressful nightmare for me. I can see the logic of your argument but it is an argument that is being put forward ten years too early. Pushing EVs too soon runs the risk of a huge consumer backlash and the move failing.

The money has to come from somewhere.
Roading/Transport (including Public Transport) has been so underfunded for ever in NZ, that we are being forced into playing catchup.
New Zealand is a country with a low population density and geographical challenges around which to build transport infrastructure.
There is no denying that money needs to be spent on better roading and more Public Transport. Either they raise it by taxes/tolls, or they cut funding elsewhere (we could cut the health budget and build quite a few flash roads, but that's not the solution). Maybe a few less inquiries and consultants?
Either that, or we reduce our population and stop growing, but I think the horse has already bolted on that one.
I have no issues paying the fuel tax (excise, whatever you want to call it) in Auckland, I'd have no issues with congestion charges or tolls on motorways either. So long as spades are put in the ground, and work is started.
I don't know if tolling the TG motorway makes sense (I don't live on the Kapiti coast) but if there is a suitable free route, and the tolled route is faster and easier, then go ahead - $3 is cheap for a stretch of road like that is going to be. If I did live there and HAD to drive my single occupant vehicle into Wellington every day I'd pay the $3 if it made my life easier and saved me time.
@Wiggum I agree with tolls and user pays as long as ALL users pay. If we are going to have tolls then the rest of the road user taxation nightmare needs to be reviewed. If in fact we need to pay more for our transport infrastructure then maybe an increase in GST to say 17% would be a fair way to burden ALL benefactors of the transport system.

I have a sneaky feeling they will introduce a peak toll, ie 6-9am inbound and 4-7 outbound, and argue its about "traffic management" rather than finance....

Using the N gateway as an example it's $2.30, which is $23 per week for 5 return trips.
If you can WOF, licence and run an older car, you can afford toll roads.

They do run them legally but they just cannot absorb additional costs. The paying of these charges do not come from savings they don't have.

Fine....pay it for towing the boat or going to the ski fields or whatever other occasional special case means you have to waste several thousand dollars / year when not doing those things....
If it's fun and you can afford it, it's not a waste of money.

Geektastic: A high quality four or six lane road from Auckland to Christchurch with tolls and a 110 kmh speed limit would benefit tourism, freight and general users greatly, as well as having road safety benefits, providing employment and so on.
Electronic tolls would smooth the process of use.
Moving goods around NZ must be ludicrously slow and expensive compared to the EU or USA.
I'd happily pay tolls to slash hours off that journey.
That would be awesome. I wonder how quickly tolls would pay for it?
The French toll roads toll at about 15c (NZD) per km (9 euro for 100km approx). That would make AKL-WGN about $105. I'd actually be happy to pay that to drive on one of those roads here, so long as it was 110-120km/h without the need to stop/slow (you could do the journey then in well under 6 hours).

What I am saying is for many families and individuals their income is used to the max week to week, they simply cannot afford additional costs.

Putting on a toll will at least pick up the drivers that have not paid towards the road, that is EV drivers but they will still be paying hundreds of dollars less than other users and that is unfair taxation. Maybe the EV should be charged twice or three times the normal toll.
