Looks like EV owners are gonna get slugged another $60 a year, as they get moved to the same levy rates as ICE vehicles,

(although as ICE drivers pay a portion of their ACC via fuel taxes, EV owners will get slugged all of that through an upfront levy jump)

Diesel vehicles pay their ACC levy on their rego (about $180 a year). Petrol pay part on their rego rego and part as a levy on the fuel.

Just another loophole that is being closed.

Agreed,  but I'm just waiting for the headlines when the bills go out next year,

Petrol cars are only paying less ACC than EVs next year if they use less than 865 litres of fuel annually. Petrol has 6c/L ACC (+GST) so that is where the balance is struck from the $59.67 rego ACC difference between petrol and EVs. Of course the whole petrol taxation structure will change when distance based RUCs are rolled out for petrol vehicles in a couple of years so the far end of today's ACC announcement will lose a lot of relevance due to that.

And off the back of that will be all the social media posts: EV's blow up! Batteries are dangerous! Petrol vehicles are safer because they're not made in China...etc

Dealers now have demonstrators of both the MG Cyberster and the BYD Shark 6. Yes, I know the Shark is a PHEV, but with a notional battery only range of 100km, it gets a mention from me in the EV thread.

I only got to have a sit in the Cyberster, but had a play with the scissor doors and the soft-top. It did answer a couple of questions I had. The steering wheel does cover a little portion of each of the 3 screens. Essentially the top two corners of the centre screen and the bottom corner closest to the wheel of each of the side screens. But all vital info is viewable and it’s certainly no worse than Hyundai/Kia’s efforts with their screens. Shame it doesn’t have a HUD, particularly for a car costing $130K. With the driver’s seat in its lowest position my head is about 1cm from the roof lining. The passenger seat is slightly lower. From what I’ve read that is because the battery is slightly slimmer on the left side. Great for LHD markets, a bit more limiting for RHD. One other thing I noted is just how wide the door sills are. Climbing down into the car across a sill that must be about 30cm will not be easy for those of us who are of advanced years (probably the only ones who can afford this).

I went just to have a look at the Shark 6, but ended up taking it for a short test drive. First impressions are it pretty positive. It is smooth, powerful and well appointed.  It is also big, especially stepping into it from a Tesla Model 3. I didn’t have it for long enough to assess properly, but it felt much nicer than a rattley old diesel.

Not too shabby, might even get me to work and back on the odd occasion I drive all the way.

PHEV means cheaper RUC at the moment, which if you never use fuel would save a hell of a lot. Remains to be seen how long that lasts for.

The Shark 6 is getting rave reviews for everything except proper offroad performance.

It looks like they addressed a lot of the issues that earlier BYD's had like the seating position, screen-only interface and lack of adjustable headrests and then made a vehicle that is perfectly suited to the AU/NZ buying public's obsession with utes.

The fact that it's economical yet still powerful, makes it quite compelling.
It would be the perfect vehicle for me, with my frequent trips to Woolworths and the mall (but seriously, it would suit me, as not only do I already have a charger, but I also do quite a bit of mountain biking and it would be great for throwing the bikes in the tray and heading off on dirt roads and forest tracks to get to trailheads).

I admit I am quite keen on the Shark 6, but it is a big vehicle, about 100mm bigger than a Ranger in all dimensions. I guess it’s what you get used to, but it wouldn’t be much fun in a lot of car parks these days.
The off-road capability is of minor interest to me as long as it can pull a modest sized boat (17’) up a boat ramp.

The ADAS seemed less intrusive than the previous BYDs I had tried (Seal & Sealion) although the speed sign recognition still picks up a lot of random limits from down side alleys, etc. And it seemed like the overspeed warning gave up after a certain amount of time, so maybe BYD have tweaked it. The driver attention monitor is on the driver’s side pillar now (same as the Ora Cat) and was overly sensitive, reminding me to look at the road when I already was. Interestingly, I held my hand in front of it, blocking my face and it didn’t complain. So I wonder if you could defeat it with a bit of opaque tape?

There is plenty of other stuff I noted, but I’d like to take one for a longer drive.

The Hamilton dealership I did the test drive from, had orders for 75.

75 is a lot, sight unseen!

Bearing in mind this is a statement by a car salesman 😉. He did say they had received a bunch of those orders since they have had the Shark6 there to test drive and that some drivers that had ordered at the field days had confirmed their orders once they had test driven one.

The first ship load is in the country for delivery in January (because why would you register in Dec 2024 when you could have an 2025 model?) and the next is due Feb/Mar.

National’s quiet U-turn on $247m EV charger pledge

Before the election, Luxon laid the blame on his political opponents, saying: “Under the Labour Government, investment in public EV infrastructure has not kept pace with the rising number of EVs and New Zealand now has the fewest public chargers per electric vehicle in the OECD.”

We will have even less now...
