SH2 Napier to Gisborne needs serious upgrades.

You just get up to 100kph and then have to drop back to 45kph for a corner (heaps of times)...

Wairoa to Gisborne is bad with slumped roads giving quite a bit if rock-n-roll.

Also there are heaps of logging trucks that come off side roads and flick stones at your windscreen.

We need to extend the RONS project to make every major state highway (starting with 1!) 4+ lane it's entire length.

National had plans to extend the expressway from Cambridge through to Tirau. I can't see why it couldn't be extended in stages further south over time.

Having it go all the way to Levin will be good, as there are plenty of alternative routes once you get to Levin.

One of the awful railway overbridges just north of Manakau was blocked by a truck accident for hours today. It's unbelievable there's not an alternative road at all to bypass SH1 in this area. Not even a farm track!

Amazed it doesn't happen more often considering the width and corners on that and the ohau bridges.

A mate of mine was driving the truck that the snow-tyre-texting girl ran into and killed her and her sister on one of those bridges.

I used to hate taking my 4-axle, 45ft trailer over them if another was coming the other way.

Yeah see, most of the proposed second batch of National's RoNS had terrible BCRs and investing billions of dollars into highways that barely get thousands of vehicles a day passing through can in no way be justified.

The only significant National roading project that is actually helpful that I can think of is the Waikato Expressway (Waterview being a Labour idea after all). You'd hardly call them an authority on where our transport billions should be spent.

Let me guess, you support cycle lanes instead of decent roads?

Having never used a cycle lane in my life, absolutely I do support them. More people on their bikes in cycle lanes means less traffic for me! (I'm not keen on a Google Maps predicted 1 hour 4 minute each way cycle to work).

If you're against cycle ways, you're ignorant and need to read more :)

Or, we could not spend the money on cycle lanes, use it to build more and better roads instead, and just legalise running over cyclists for good measure.

your reply is highly offensive, and really should be posted on here be it tongue in cheek or not.

building better roads is not always possible.

My wife drives the route between Wellington and Napier often for work, she saw 3 vehicle accidents yesterday alone but noted there has been a lot of late on the road between Otaki and Levin so thank god NZTA is working through the process of upgrading that to expressway.

For me personally they should do the entire North Island SH1 between Wellington and Whangarei as Expressway/Motorway.

Certainly do not need all of SH1 4-laned. Some more passing lanes in places (not many though, it is pretty good).

The Waikato Expressway, when completed, will be a stunning bit of road. They do need a bit more work on SH2 from the bottom of the Bombays through to Tauranga - especially the bit through the gorge and to Bethlehem. The gorge would be very expensive to fix though, and I don't know if it will ever be done.

The little bit of the Desert Road with all the dips and hairpins should really be upgraded - couple of nice bridges would do the job. Also SH1 near the southern end of Lake Taupo - there is a section only around 2km long that is really narrow, rough and windy.

Not sure how they'd do much with that bit of road easily though - she's pretty much a cliff right into the lake, and I'm sure the whole area is 'sacred' and probably they'll find a burial ground of some sort so who knows. undecided

Other than that SH1 in the NI is pretty mint. When the Waikato Expressway and Transmission Gully/Peka Peka to Otaki are all finished that will be awesome.

Napier to Gisborne is a big one - but where do you even start? It's such a big stretch of road going through some really gnarly terrain.

In the South Island there are a few spots on SH6, 7 and 65 that could use straightening/widening but there is a lot of work going on since Kaikoura which has improved it a lot already.

Edit - I don't know the area between SH1 and Tauranga very well so can't really comment on that. They definitely need to do something proper with the Manawatu Gorge though. What's the latest on that?
