Speed measurement and image are instantaneous. In any event once the speed is confirmed, that's the speed issued. 2km/h over the speed limit from a speed camera is impossible. So it's either a fanciful extention of the truth or there is more to the story.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

That's just not the case though. I was snapped by one over-taking on SH1 traveling south (just south of the petrol station on the flats) and it was down in a ditch behind the railing with a bush just in behind it.

It was on the lighter end of dusk and I saw the flash. Was definitely over 104, considering I was passing, but they definitely didn't make it obvious the van was there. Another van 100 meters ahead of the one that snapped me, was on the other side of the road flashing away at motorists too. That one was significantly more obvious though as there was no bush or railing on that side.

4 km over though isn't just 1km over, there is a big difference. So you were nearly 10% over, which would be over the margin of error of the speedo. So the fine was fair enough. I use cruise control for keeping at 50,

In my case, I definitely deserve it. Teaches me for trying to pass safely! Ticket hasn't come yet though, so maybe the cop forgot the SD card. ;)

Yeah, not all pictures end up as tickets, there are a number of reasons as to why it may be discarded. Fingers crossed.

50 meters isn't far at all, especially in a 100 km/h area, not even enough for reaction time (1.8 seconds if my maths serves correct) let alone time to react...so understandable if it seems like they are hiding. But the couple of years we had cameras completely obscured behind trees and bushes is long gone.

Yeah, not all pictures end up as tickets, there are a number of reasons as to why it may be discarded. Fingers crossed.

Fair enough too, but it definitely looked as if they made an effort to make sure it wasn't easily seen.

My saving grace was that the car I was passing was potentially blocking...Maybe.

I think sometimes it appears that the camera vans are hiding but I guess they need to park far as they can off the road for safety.

In December I received my first demerit points.
57kmh in a school zone, so 17kmh over, normal limit is, 70kmh outside of the school times. I drive 50,000k per year for work around the country, this was south of Greymouth, which is a 70kmh zone for quite a distance. There is one school further south, I saw the flashing sign, slowed down. Then the second school I missed the flashing sign, saw a whole lot of kids and school buses and wondered what was going on so slowed down. Policeman team out fifty metres later to stop me, I assumed to breath test me (I had driven for three hours of so from Christchurch that morning). He stated, you're going a bit fast in a school zone, I replied where is the sign? I saw the first one about five k back. He pointed forward at the sign from the opposing direction and said that light is on, so it's a school zone. I said where is the one at my end? And he pointed back towards it where it was between school buses.

In all likelihood it was probably visible between the buses or possibly over the top, but he wasn't negotiating. Be said Merry Christmas, and had to post it to me. 20 demerits, and $120.

I must admit, despite driving all over the place, sometimes the speed limits are a complete mystery. I'm in Napier for work at the moment and I swear there are different limits every kilometre. I think they should paint lines across the road depending on what is changing to.

As for driving at say 90kmh, no way. If I average 60kmh, and drop it by 10kmh by doing 90kmh that adds three hours to my working week.
Mind you the logging trucks between Gisborne and Napier this morning ensured I was very leisurely.
