The "light EV" (cars) fleet in NZ is now at 1512, up 190 in June. This is pluggable EVs only, not petrol-powered hybrids.

I think the 500 Postie Carts had added to the number.

I hope more companies will consider EVs for their around the town operational fleet and arrange for the charging points to be installed in the garages which could possibly be used by the public as well. Then perhaps leasing for EVs will become an option, whcih in turn will make available 3 years old New Zealand New ex-lease EVs to the general public at affordable prices with the EVSEs being up to NZ safety standars and spare parts available from the official dealers.

It was 100 post vehicles last month, I think, plus 92 others (including mine).

I see the two new ABB charging units are physically installed by the McDs drive-thru in Greenlane. TWO 50kW fast chargers just a few hundred meters from my house. EV Heaven.

The government's programme in support of the adoption of electric vehicles can be read, in overview, here.

More generally, the government's (very positive) set of information resources about EVs can be found here.

Having read it, it's mostly wishful thinking with a few weak-tea measures and equity-partner programmes to support largely non-existent "innovative" private initiatives.

Ideological blinders well and truly on. NZ is a bit short on Elon Musks and always - since forever - has been......but no one told our government.

We need a new government. Yesterday.

Even if we did have one billionaire prepared to invest to build a national EV charging network....would we really want a private monopoly running what would eventually be a critical piece of national transport infrastructure? Even if there were two.....oligopoly anyone? Same again for three......

Clueless in the Beehive.....at least until later in 2017.

No doubt...but what they obviously lack is capital. The usual NZ problem....since forever. That's why governments have tended to end up doing so much here.....it is the largest aggregator of capital for investments of all kinds - especially infrastructure. Government leadership is the usual for small countries like NZ and for large countries with low population density (Russia, Canada, Australia, Brasil for example) :-) Unfortunately, an American-originated neo-liberal ideology created in a country with hundreds of billionaires has caused disciples here to tie both our hands behind our backs in practical terms...and then embed one foot in concrete.

What are these things you refer to? "Program" and "Make Things Happen"?

I wish NZ's government had this kind of vision and determination to actually do something about climate change.

500 new electric vehicle fast charging stations to be installed across Ontario (Canada).

All will be installed by March 2017 at a cost of C$20 million, from the province's $325 million Green Investment Fund.

The Ontario government offers a C$14,000 subsidy for buyers of electric vehicles.

They plan to have EV be 5% of new car sales by 2020.

This is the sort of thing our government could be doing to reduce emissions and cut oil imports - and for a lot less than the cost of a flag referendum.

Not as generous as Ontario's (Up to CA $14,000 subsidy per electric car), but nothing to sneeze at either. The $1m/year promotional budget, plus the $6m/year contestable fund plus the RUC exemption are nothing to sneeze at.

If spent carefully this money will go a long way.

The problem here is that even if you can buy a new EV it cost about twice the price of say a Mazda 3 or Toyota Corolla . The average Kiwi non business car buyer will not wear those prices.. Second hand import still costs as much as a new Mazda 2.

If I could afford to own two cars, then an EV with a pure electric range of under 50km would be ideal for most of my daily trips (and without the need to charge during the day)

Its those longer trips out of Dunedin that I frequently go on where having an EV would not suit - the availability of fast chargers in a radius of Dunedin is almost nothing

Only if you can afford two "New" cars which most people can't.

I read it. The $6 million is matching funds.....so it can't be compared to a govt program establishing infrastructure. At best it will enable piecemeal, uncoordinated projects in support of services by and for particular interests that maynot even be generally useful. For example, Spark might decide to set up a private EV charging network for the EV cars used by its own fleet....and seek to gain access to these funds in support of that on the basis they are adopting EVs and lots of them. There is absolutely no guarantee the wider public would benefit from this infrastructure.....partly paid for by this program.

The govt's package is far too passive. Just one more example of their "market will provide" approach......and as an approach it has been a spectacular fail across the board, from housing to health care to education to transport generally. I do note that where direct intervention has been OK (for trucking (RoNS) and farming (irrigation schemes that disregard wider environmental concerns around water - as in Canterbury).....it has been to advantage National's core patrons.....and wider concerns - environmental and social - are ignored. One could also add the recent determination to give more state funding to private schools wealthy people already send their kids to......even as the public schools make do with what they have.

In that context......this package looks like the best outcome an enthusiastic but junior Minister (Simon Bridges) was able to get through a neo-liberal Cabinet who make exceptions for their mates.

Maybe charge.net.nz will seek matching funds for the roll-out of their fast-charging network. That would be cool. But it is left to chance.....the program itself doesn't mandate any specific outcome at all as far as a charging network goes. That's my problem with it.

I am guessing it should last that long no prob.. RegGuheert on mynissanleaf.com posted his tracking of the battery capacity on his Leaf (Demo in Sep 2011) purchased in Mar 2012.

In Jun 2016 he has 33691 miles - capacity: 51.25AH. Capacity loss is not that dramatic. He assumes new was 66.25Ah ..

Jaguar is tired of Tesla eating it's lunch in the US market (and others).

Looks like they have an EV in the works for 2019.

Extract:

26 km in EV mode - that covers my daily trips.

What could be interesting for us is that Greenlane is becoming The Most Saturated [with chargers] area in Auckland. Looks like they are promising it free, quote:

"Get your juice on us! Selected dealerships around New Zealand will have free charge zones set up: Manukau Toyota, Auckland City Toyota Greenlane, Hawkes Bay Toyota, Manawatu Toyota, Rutherford and Bond Wellington, and Miles Toyota Christchurch."

Linuxluver - how about you hop in with your Leaf there and ask if you can charge it?

I am keen to drive test that one but mostly interested in the next generation version - Prius Prime...
