The Waikato Expressway, when completed, will be a stunning bit of road. They do need a bit more work on SH2 from the bottom of the Bombays through to Tauranga - especially the bit through the gorge and to Bethlehem. The gorge would be very expensive to fix though, and I don't know if it will ever be done.

They are looking to push the expressway to Piarere in the next few year (politicians willing)

So I am guessing they will use the Kaimais as the preferred route to Tauranga...

Recent even have underscored the need to relocate SH6 through Nelson.  Currently runs between an unstable cliff and an ocean that regularly washes up onto the road.  Also too narrow and runs through an area of high public and private amenity.

Unlikely to happen under this govt as the alternate route runs through a low income neighbourhood.

The hope of anything through the old rail alignment other than a cycling superhighway died at the election

Agreed.  Too many labour votes in the suburbs the route would run through.

At last! An official announcement that a new road between Levin and Otaki is going ahead. The final route hasn't yet been confirmed. It will only be a two lane road and not an expressway, but will have provision to increase it to four lanes in the future.

Yes was pleasantly surprised to see that last night.

I think they are idiots for not making it 4 lanes now, but at least it's going ahead in some form.

Two lanes? more shortsighted planning. Why do we continue to make these mistakes, how much more would it cost to make it four lanes now. It's like the dumb planning that resulted in the Terrace tunnel in the Capital being only three lanes.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

4 lanes might be useful for the southern half between Otaki and Kimberley, especially if the road promotes growth in housing in Levin and commuting to Wellington. But with the amount of traffic that will peel off into Levin (north and southbound), 2 lanes would be fine for the northern half of the road the of the road for the forseeable future

Four lanes would be ideal to have in the future. SH57 north of Levin is mostly a very good stretch of road now, compared to how it once was.

I doubt I'll see four lanes north of Levin in my life time. Probably not needed anyway, as there are heaps of alternate local roads one can take if either highway is blocked.

This is a face saving announcement - Yes its great they will decide the route (and presumably proceed with property acquisitions and route protection) - but there is no funding for design or anything else before 2021,-

Basically what you will see in the next few years will be , bigger signs saying slow down, lower speed limits, more cops and larger rumble strips....

Its basically a "rinse and repeat" of the "western link road" that Labour promised Kapiti in the 2000s... that was finally dumped by incoming National Govt and replaced with the expressway...

From the Announcement:

"The plans include:

  • Delivering short and medium term safety improvements
  • Designating for a new route which will have allowance for four lanes in the future
  • Working to enhance public transport options and improve amenity within Levin.

Selection of a preferred route for a new road will be completed this year.  The corridor will be designated as soon as possible to provide greater certainty for the community. It is envisaged that the new state highway will be planned as a two-lane highway while allowing for additional capacity in the future by protecting a route suitable for four lanes.   The construction timing and form of this new route will depend on growth and funding priorities across the rest of the country.

Unlikely for SH1,

Bbut once the new "gorge" road is completed there will be push the upgrade SH57 to four lanes, its pretty easy terrain, with no major bridges required....

At that point you would have a 4 lane highway from Palmy to Wellington. (+ over the hill).. which should cater for growth over the next 50 years...

Once the current pp2o expressway is finished Otaki is going to become the next kapiti coast...  ( the regional council will likely also extend its regular train service there with DEMUS).....

SH1 between Picton and Wellington.

I used to enjoy the occasional road cruise between islands - haven't done it or years, airfares have gotten cheaper and cheaper while boat fares have gotten expensiver and expensiver.

We just priced taking the car across the Staits at Christmas. It's cheaper to fly and rent a car on the other side. Crazy.

"expensiver" ?

The pricing is intended to keep North Island drivers out of the South Island.
