pdh:

Function of our current society.

No push-back against zero concern about public disruption for sake of 'official convenience'.

examples:
(a) cops closing down main routes for 6 hours for a scene examination after road crashes.
This clearly doesn't make our roads any safer - yet nobody says it's unacceptable.

What a piece of utterly uninformed and disgustingly self-centred commentary. I am hardly known as a rabid defender of the police (in fact I am probably one of the most critical on here) but having prosecuted dangerous driving causing death/injury charges and done work that helped to decide such cases for the judiciary, I know for a fact that these scene examinations are (1) absolutely vital to discovering the truth as to what happened, (2) holding offenders who have committed criminal breaches to account, and (3) are done with urgency by people charged with doing their work to a very high standard and balancing that with the need to re-open roads ASAP. The Serious Crash Unit of the police doesn't get involved unless there is a serious crash, which entails either serious injuries and/or fatalities. Just step away from your soapbox for a moment and think whether you might mind that theSCU just do a cursory examination if it was your loved one that was involved in a crash, especially if the person was involved through no fault of his/her own.

"Function of our current society" it is alright. That there are people who are so remarkably self-centred as to think it justifiable to fire off such uninformed cheapshots at people doing important work after devastating events that have utterly shattered others' lives. My god, you are delayed maybe once or twice a year because of this? The world weeps.

As it happens, I took the trains and buses all over town this week and loved it. Especially at rush hour.

I have a HOP card so it was cheap.

'Loved'? You got to get from where you are to a station, you gotta get from a station to where you want to be. There's gotta actually be a train line going there. It's something to tolerate, not love, surely?
Unless you've got hours of spare time and just love trains that is.

I take it you have never lived in Japan then? Travelling by train is indeed something to love. It saddens me that we can't use trains more often here, but slowly it's improving.

Yeah, "Loved".

I've been putting on a bit of weight over the past year and the culprit was my electric car. I drive it for everything instead of walking and taking public transport.

So this week I walked the 7 minutes to the local train station...and walked from the destination stations to the places I was working. Journey times are acceptable compared to the same journeys done in a car at rush hour. Plus I lost 3KG in just 6 days.

Awesome.

What amused me about the Piccadilly Line in London was that people would run up the stairs to catch the train - even though there is a train every 5 minutes!

Average wait time about 2.5 minutes!

Stuck on a train for 3 hours is absolutely outrageous. AT have had a lot of problems in the past but I hope they have turned a leaf and realize it is completely unacceptable and will be making changes.

On another note, I took the train from Glen Innes to Britomart at 7pm-ish and back at 8:30ish yesterday. Because I'm not silly I checked the train schedule and arrived at the station only a couple of minutes before it arrived so I didn't end up standing on the platform for ages. On the way back I didn't care about waiting so arrived at Britomart early, and because there is a built in buffer between when the train leaves and arrives I was able to get on 5 minutes before departure and sit back and relax.

Didn't have to drive, didn't have to find a park, didn't have to pay for a park.. all in exchange for $6.60. Who'd be upset about that?

Cheaper to catch an Uber?
1 x Train fare at $3.30 and one at $5.50 = $8.80......
https://www.uber.com/en-NZ/ride/ says it would be $12-$17 for an Uber.

Actually, Uber say the trip OP wanted to do would cost $10-14. Given it is a door to door service, at any time required and a lot safer than PT is really is cheaper. Pretty sad, to be honest. The only way people will start using PT is if it is cheaper than Uber/private car.

It's no surprise that people won't pay more for something less comfortable and less convenient.
