Every so often I come across a strange rectangular grid of small white dots painted on the road - usually on straight roads in quiet places.

What is it?! I never saw them in the UK so have no idea what they are.

It's a pavement testing site. It's to work out how fast the ruts are forming, how quickly the pavement is deteriorating. It allows the road controlling authority to manage the road network by ascertaining the condition of their network and then schedule a maintenance regime.
