tieke:

This may have already been covered in the thread, but is there anything in particular you need to do to allow multiple AP-handoff? I've replaced some old unifi APs with these, and although two access points seem to be playing nicely together, I've been seeing some lookup delays which I'm unsure are related to the APs or something else.  I've given both APs the same SSID and password but otherwise have basically the same setup as michaelmurfy, except I've enabled the 802.11r fast roaming profile.

I also see that a few of you have set up both 5Ghz and dual band wlans - what is the advantage of this?

While bandsteering and having the same SSID for 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz is alright at segergating clients to where they should be, its not perfect. 5Ghz clients DO end up on 2.4Ghz.

In some cases you wish to have a 5Ghz client on 5Ghz Only, in this case its handy to have a 5ghz only network to jump onto. Same goes for 2.4, if a 2.4ghz client only client tries to join a bandsteered network, its going to have an issue for the first few tries.

i find roaming just helps hand things off more smoothly than allowing clients to just do it all themselves. I have used ERoaming more for controlling clients too far away rather than forcing roaming as its kinda a brute force approch.

I take it a step further, having my becon timings to encurage more uptake of 5Ghz, extra channels to force an AP.

I've gone a day without UAPSD and still getting reboots:

Other unit has not rebooted even once in the period shown on the graph. I'm going to contact Cambium about the reboots - the two units have virtually identical configs. I'll also pull the config off the bad one & load onto the good one just to be totally sure.

@tieke I've set up another WiFi network on 5GHz only for devices that are fixed (eg, Chromecast, FireTV and laptops) to ensure they never connect via 2.4GHz, everything else is on my main dual network with band steering (so it is unlikely they would use 2.4GHz however I've had bad experiences with devices (Apple especially) with connecting to the stronger signal and being all stubborn about it).

@hio77 didn't get an invite to your party - disappointed. For water tightness nothing that a layer of Silicone around the seams and connectors can't fix ;)

And leave my UFB connection and likely end up lost in the middle of nowhere since I'm pretty sure where you are is full of cattle and has no mobile coverage.

I've made contact with Cambium and will report back on how it goes.

My bad unit ran for the longest time yet - 6 hours overnight without issues. Then I tried running iPerf from the iPhone. Got 358Mbps, then the unit rebooted.

Wow that was a wild guess ;) it actually would be rather cool having a middle of nowhere party. My internet appears to be a little congested this morning since my sister is watching Netflix at 1080p via the Chromecast + her Macbook is downloading an update.. Only getting this:

Then again that test wasn't done on ideal conditions - on a Chromebook over WiFi from the other end of the house.

What range are people getting on these units? (I'm assuming 2.4Ghz has more range than 5Ghz)

Going to buy one of these for work (tiny office of three rooms so one is plenty), and also buy myself either one or two for use at home, (depending on their range profile).

Know I will kick myself if I buy only one for home, and wish I'd got myself two instead at the deal price.... but happy to save the money if one is enough!

My house is pretty much square about 13m by 13m. AP would be near centre of house. Furthest internal distance is 10m from AP into garage through 4x walls (made of wood studs & gib).  Furthest distance in rest of house is a max of 8m away and up to 3x walls away. Outside Deck is 7m away through 2x walls.

What sort of coverage would you expect of those extremities on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz? (Garage the least important as it will have wired ethernet out there anyway, so I could always re-purpose an existing router as an AP for out there if needed).

From 13m my connected speed on the 5GHz network was between 24 and 72mbps, where as 4m away it was 390-433mbps, that is the max for the network card in my laptop.

Where as the 2.4GHz would have still been well over 100 for that level of signal out of 150

I get about 30Mbps on 5GHz from 15m away via 4 walls.

Within the same room I can get over 300Mbps.

with high gain, i hit 867Mbit a story up and 30M away on 5ghz to the further away AP.

on a general client, say a phone it is unlikely to see that AP at all.

In terms of 2.4Ghz range, i have gotten mine as far as 150-200M away on just my phone alone, i have culled off alot of that range as its more shouting than working realistically

Reworked my whole setup in plans for this weekend this evening, Just picked up my managed switch so VLANs away. Guest VLAN, all filtered off at the router level, different dhcp domain etc

Using the Guest access portal system, Simple click through simply to make it clear its guest access, its sub netted and segmented away from everything else.

Trunking is working without a hitch, only issue i had in it was my own fault - forgetting to actually enable dhcp on the interface causes a little while of head-scratching assuming there's a disconnect somewhere or not quite trunked correctly..

VLAN setup on the AP itself was interesting, took me a little while to work out the AP doesnt do any logic check on Wireless radios being giving arbitrary VLANs they simply wont do bugger all with the data they receive...

Overall working perfectly, once worked out with the live AP that wasnt in heavy active use i replicated the settings across the two. Will take down my test Node now and swap it out for a replicated setup for a temporary garage AP.

For those who monitor their nodes, https://github.com/m0sia/cacti-ePMP re-purposing these might be worth a look.

I have started playing with the template variables system, it can be rather handy actually.

Oh hell.

Wall mounting using the wood screws that come with the e400 (with the plastic mounting device) cause the e400 to NOT COME OFF once it is on. I had to pry the unit off with a screwdriver ripping the screws out of the wall in the process and re-mount using the smaller screws drilling small pilot holes (comes off nicely now). Don't make this mistake... 2 more holes to patch up when I leave this tenancy ;)
