I've noticed that Spark is currently offering a $700 savings deal over the term of a contract for a new iPhone 16. This seems like a significant discount, and I'm wondering if it's out of the ordinary.

It is a bit unusual for iPhones, to be fair.  It's common in the Android space, but Apple devices historically have very tight sales margins for telcos so it was unusual to see an Apple device sale until the end of a generation, ahead of a new product release.

I was going to agree with the others here, but I did the maths and to be fair with Spark specifically if you purchased the base model iPhone (128GB, though this math should actually apply to any of the other devices) on a 12mo term on the $92 plan your total spend is $2004 for the whole year including the device.

If you were on a $50 plan and bought the device out-right as an example with any of the other big telcos, your costs would be approximately $2200 over 12 months.

So, yeah. It actually is a good deal IF! You only buy the device on a 12 month term.

I don't think the math is wrong but I did it three times to double check and I think it works out.

Also, the deal gets better the higher your normal mobile usage plan is anyway. For example if you're using a $72 plan anyway because that's what you arguably 'need', then the cost benefit ratio is better.

Same math would be $2464 for outright purchase and your $72 month plan, vs again $92 plan and the $66.67 per month for the base model iPhone. Which is again $2004

I guess it depends on how you interpret the question. Is this offer unique? Probably not.

Is this offer unusual? I'd say yes - iPhones don't usually launch with suc strong discount offers. Last year's offer was $400 off, and at the time it was considered really good. So almost double that on an iPhone launch is out of the ordinary. Sign of diminishing buyer power and the low appeal of the iPhone 16 Pro I guess.
