Brutal result for Mercedes this morning after locking out the front row in qualy.

They are also making many more strategic errors than in recent years - the cracks are starting to show.

Great result for Max at "home"... but I was kinda rooting for Kimmi to take the win.

Agree, Kimi had his best chance for years.

Im not sure Merc mistake was that bad, in hindsight it was. Halfway through with Danny Ricc's tyres, I felt there was a chance that Hamilton could have come back with fresher tyres in the hope that Danny Ricc's tyres will happen to everyone else, and given the track temp. They all make the unexpected 2nd stops. If Mercs came in, then the others decide late to stay out. Field stretch and no track position. Tough call. Once the tyre issues became common, its an easy choice after the fact.

First race for what seems years when all the big guns are racing on same stops and in view.

As for Mercedes, it seems they have reached the limit of power, its now becoming a problem as they seem to maybe on the limit engine wise. They know that as they withheld it one race, and both still went phut. As aways, when not in front, they arent that great, just normal. The way they felt last race is now gone, the season is now reliability, and beware of mode 1

From my observations, Merc is still the team to beat, and both titles are still theirs to lose. Do I support Merc? No I don't like LH, but that doesn't detract from my observation.

On Danny Ricciardo. I see words, and body language that tells me that staying at RBR is nowhere near to be likely. The only place is Ferrari (not sure if Kimi is locked in 2019?) He has met with McLaren. That a huge risk, an Alonso-esque risk.

I pick that while he probably will stay at RBR, he might go to Ferrari, who will swap seats with Kimi, Kimi goes to RBR. Yes, I guess it sounds odd, but RBR having Kimi is still a win. Seb and Danny would be a mighty team even though SV wont like it, but Ferrari now have a top car, and they would have a very good future for the next 3 years if they had that combo.

Ferrari have made good inroads this year. They've done that in other years too, but Mercedes have always come back much stronger from fairly early on.

What's been interesting this year is that Ferrari have been able to keep up with Mercedes development. The Mercs haven't received an upgrade after a few months and dominated like they have in previous years.

If nothing else, it's nice to see championships still open at this nearly midway point.

Still hoping for rain at each event, but it has been a bit better this year.

Still wanting to see McLaren do well (NZ linked team and all) but man those guys are so out of touch. Can't blame a honda engine this year either, and sadly honda seems to have learnt on McLaren, burnt them and is now doing well elsewhere.

I now think Danny Ricc will stay at RBR on a one year contract. The purpose is to then go to Ferrari, or McLaren (who he has talked to) if they turn into a title contender. You never know if in 18 months there is a seat at Mercedes, unlikely, but it can happen.Plus RBR is Honda powered next year. That may be awesome, it may be pretty good, it may be awful. One year at RBR is my pick to give him real options the year after

Some of the comments in this Reddit thread have me laughing out loud.

I enjoyed the race. It's a shame that it takes safety cars to give us an exciting contest in modern F1, but i'll take what I can get.

I have to admit it was the most interesting race of the year. May there be many more .... but I was surprised they slapped Kimi with a 10s penalty. Were the stewards all British or German (Merc) ....

Vettel did something similar and scored a 5s penalty from memory, taken in front of a pitstop, it's not much.

10s seems fair if it was intentional, but I don't think these things ever are intentional really. The cars are so flimsy to loads in certain directions, that it's very very risky to try for contact without smashing your own wing to pieces, which happened to Vettel in the incident above.

Racing incident. Yep cracks showing at Merc for sure, and Hamilton back to his pretty boy talking crap after the race etc. Great drive from him to recover to second, just boring to hear the whinging on the radio the whole race. Goes on about incidents spoiling the race for fans, but fans don't want to see one car disappear into the distance and drive alone to the finish either.

Wow, Red Bull massively down on straight line speed. McLaren only scoring points by Alonso pushing way hard. Poor buggers were the testing bed for Honda, who finally came right the season after McLaren parted ways.

Hartley has had a shocker of a season, but only flip side hasn't shone at all in those few times when Mechanical failure wasn't putting an end to his race.

Fully agree with the above, wish the racing was naturally that close, but I'll still take it when provided by the safety car/rain/tyre failure etc

Yeah, Im thinking mandatory safety car now!

Right result, Ferrari was the best team, Merc fairing under pressure. They should ahem pitted Bottas, then its a straight fight, but they left him exposed, I assume to give Hamilton a rough show

Brundle said a similar incident that lost one driver recently was 5s, plus they decided to go easier on first lap, so 0/2 in my book

Not sure it was that great a drive to get 2nd. He was gifted 25 seconds, and Bottas's place. While I'm not a fan, it would have been uber gutting at turn 3. As to hom feeling a problem, its the car.Its super in clean air, and average in not, always been like that.

Ferrari seems rock solid. Its as fast, and its rock solid.

I feel now that Ferrari are there. They are equal to Mercedes. Just as fast in straight line speed. Bound to see more close races from here on, although a safety car mid race would be ideal to narrow field spread, top up tyres, and slug it out

Interesting to see the moaning by several drivers, demanding the team do something very early on in the race.

If you pit really early, yes you'll shake up the track position, but you'll also then have to run very long stints on tyres. Often better to stick with it for a while, stop moaning and put your head down, and then see how the race unfolds.

1. Hards last longer, less grip

2. Soft lasts shorter, more grip

3. Hot day, tyres are likely to grain up as they did last race, make your choice!
