Yeah, Cleaver got a mention last night in the coverage before I switched over to watch Lawson in the F2.  I thought the comments McMillan made about NZ during commentary were on the mark.  Where are the innovative, unorthodox, explosive batters in NZ cricket?  Are there any?

Allen needs to improve his ball selection and hand-eye.  I know he's young and relatively inexperienced but even so.  They should have put Mitchell or Neesham in when Allen got out, Kane and Devon became a handbrake on the innings before it even got going in the chase.

Not surprised the captain has discovered a medical appointment that was unmentioned when the squad was released a week ago.  If he hopes to secure another decent IPL contract he needs to not be on Indian TV screens right at the minute.

Rain is forecast from afternoon for tomorrow, it's been nice here today but the weather pattern has been tropical-like thunderstorms for the last week.  I'll be surprised if the match isn't rain-affected or worse tomorrow.

With Williamson being away for 3rd T20 I wonder if they will move Mitchell back to opening with Allen and Conway plays at No 3 for tomorrows match then bring in Bracewell at 5. It would be perfect XI.

I'm about 5km from McLean Park and it started raining about 15 minutes ago.  The dark clouds started rolling in about an hour ago after a bit of a scorcher up until then.  It's coming down pretty steady at the moment, good for my vege garden, bad for cricket.

I hope the game isn’t cancelled tonight. Series would end up being 1-0 to India rather 1-1 if NZ win tonight.

As I said with my previous comment bringing in Mitchell as opener with Allen would be a good idea to keep the strike rate ticking. In the T20 World Cup it seems that the players who ended up with a strike rate of 120 or less end up losing the game. If we don’t end up losing early wickets then can bring in Phillips next instead of Conway to keep the strike rate ticking.

Not being negative, but Rugby and Cricket and League we are failing. Cricket wise I find it REALLY frustrating. We have a top line lineup, but we seem to take turns failing. But Ryan Fox, Lydia Ko, and SailGP are doing great!  I dont know what it is, but it seems to be a Kiwi psyche. If we are going well we hammer it. If not we fold, AKA play not to lose. A mate of mine is English, "whinging P**Ms as he says, but he also says we are worse, hard to disagree at times.

Play your best, play to your strengths, the score will look after itself, thats the mindset some Kiwi sports need to adapt.

Rain, possibly heavy and thundery. Fresh northwesterlies. That's right now via Met Service. . Humidity 89%, air pressure falling. Looks over for me, but if whoever bats first, every ball has to be a boundary for Duckworth Lewis Rule

Cricket really frustrates me. We have the players to help us win but we don’t seem to pick the best playing 11 for the day. In the World Cup what really frustrated me was not picking Bracewell in the side. He has been performing quite well over past year or two but could not get into the XI. I would have played him ahead of Santner or Sodhi and to an extent Williamson. Our batting has really let us down even though in the semi final our bowling wasn’t that good but could have won if Conway caught Babar at the start of their innings.

I would rather they play to win than play to lose. I don’t mind if we get out for a low total if there was intent to keep up the strike rate and win the game.

It's stopped raining here but still overcast and looking ominous.  Should be okay provided the ground has dried out, council spent a fortune on installing a fast draining surface after the fiasco of the Chappell-Hadlee match being washed out a few years ago.

Sorry, just started raining here again.  I think it's going to be rain-affected all night, even if the game gets started.  Once the sun goes down, the heavens tend to open up.  That's been the pattern the last week or so.

I'll get tea on as the wife is away, either T20 or watch the DP World Tour day 4 (no spoilers thanks)

You're not being "negative", and it's not negative to raise concerns if they feel legitimate.  Most often criticism is borne out of a genuine love for the sport under discussion, and an equal desire to see that team perform well.

We have been spoilt for performance by the NZ cricket men's team in recent years, they have been pretty much bullet-proof with everything they try almost always turning to gold for them.  It's been a rare period of dominance, arguably unequaled in history.

But, since the Test Championship win they have looked human again.  Losses to Bangladesh and South Africa at home last summer, the series against England, the ODI losses in Australia, the failure in the T20 tri-series at home and then at the World Cup.  That huge win against Australia is the exception that proves the general rule.

They've been on the slide for a while and you never know when any player is going to turn up.  Not so long ago it was every player almost always turning up.

The Toss has been Delayed due to a wet outfield. There has been lingering around Napier throughout the afternoon but that has all but stopped.(Stuff)

Lingering? I'll assume rain...

Kane Williamson will miss tonight's match due to a pre-arranged medical appointment. (Stuff)

Can he not go tomorrow??? Not dismissing whatever medical issue he has, but it seems a tad odd

100%. I watch a lot of golf. Entirely different as its not a team sport, but you see the psycological issues. Every elite sportsperson is elite, fails are often between the ears. Ive played sport, and Ive lost as I played not to lose as I expected to win. Then Id beat someone above my grade or go close. Between the ears. BMC is probably the best example, play hard, you will never win every game but you are in play every game

As the cliche says, play your best, the score will look after itself

8pm start

I assume overs will be reduced? If so, make the most of it. Runs matter but dont hang onto wickets, the game is too short

Kane Williamson has stepped down as test captain ahead of the announcement of the side to tour Pakistan, with Tim Southee named as his successor.

No disrespect to Southee but I would have expected Latham to get the job.  It's Latham who normally fills in for Kane in the test format, with Southee assuming captaincy duties in the white ball stuff occasionally.

Just a bit of an unexpected decision all round for me, maybe Latham's not going to tour Pakistan.  Will be interested to see that squad when it's named.  Hope they can find a place for Phillips, he deserves more of a go at test level.  I think some forget he came into the test side at the SCG on the last tour of Australia and scored a half century.  He's quality.
