You get a 10 place penalty for the first change, and then I think it is a subsequent 5 place drop for each component after the first. Alonso and Button this year have been constantly replacing engines, last season was even worse! Rosberg won't yet as he still has one penalty free engine that can have tokens applied, if he took free ones now, not only would he drop back but the amount of 'engines' unlocked would be the same spec as Hamilton's rather than a free upgraded engine later; Hamilton has no choice but rosberg is better off waiting before utilising the free engine with the upgrades.

4 engines would be too hard, after FP3 the cars in are in Parc Ferme and cannot be worked on so a 4th engine could not be fitted and still hit qualifying; I'd imagine the stewards would take a dim view of missing out on qualifying to install a new engine and then you still need to run it and test it which would be difficult in Qualifying.

Based on what you're saying Hamilton's championship chances have just been increased, not decreased. He is leading, he will easily overtake most cars, there is possibility of Rain and SC, to help him, and at the end of a good finish, get 3 new engines. Where as Rosberg is left with 2 new engines (one this weekend, and one more - I don't see him lasting all year with 2 engines, unless he's going to use some old ones). I'd be laughing all the way to the chequered flag if I were Hamilton, not sure what he's complaining about.

Yup, he is pretty sweet. They've specifically chosen a track which they should be able to use the engine to its fullest, and get most of the places back. Starting on yellow striped tyres should also give them an advantage as the red striped are blistering after a few laps, which I think Rosberg is utilising.

He should finish in the points and being 6 points ahead, as long as he gets to 5th or so, he should be pretty sweet over the next few races. Basically his 'complaining' is not about the engines, but the fact that he will likely lose 1st place in the championship due to the engine issues... but that should reap benefits later.

So as it stands, Rosberg and Hamilton have the same engine for Spa and both are brand new. Rosberg has one left, which can be upgraded with the final tokens, after which he will take a penalty; Hamilton has 2 left, due to the changes, but they're locked to the current spec and cannot be upgraded. Hamilton can therefore push harder and utilise them more than Rosberg as they don't have to last as long. If Rosberg has to take a penalty in the future, it might not work out quite as sweet as really Monza and Spa are the two real remaining power tracks, having already been to Canada.

I don't think Hamilton will have it as easy as originally planned. The top 6 cars a reasonably close to Rosberg's time

Yeah, that is why I suggested 5th. Toto was clear that they where having trouble on longer distance runs, especially with the red wall tyres. I think Hamilton will be fine until he hits Force India and Williams and then he'll struggle more, although I do wonder whether a non-qualifying setup which is designed for racing will actually be better than we normally see as the Mercedes are generally not so good following cars as they're tuned to lead from the front.

Spa was all about damage limitation and giving him enough engines to last the rest of the season, any points gained will be a bonus I feel.

In a straight dash to the line, JB thinks Hamilton will finish 4th easy. THat's not including SC and Rain ... that could go either way I suppose.

In fact, he has the most tyres available, not sure if the "right" tyres, but he hardly used any rubber all of Quali - remember he set a pedestrian time that i'm sure barely warmed up the tyres.

One thing I didn't get was rosbergs use of the softs in the q1. Considering they're the race tyres and the supersofts aren't going to do good whatsoever so why not use them up in the qualifying sessions.

Exactly! I'm sure this will come out if he fails to win. And if I were Hamilton, qualify on supersofts and start the race on the softs ... but perhaps a gently scrubbed set is even better?

Maybe best to use in Q2 so can start on the softs? Only if the SSs are not the mandatory trye i guess. but if you do whsat the crowd is doing you can't go wrong (ie start on SS). but he's used a soft and wasted a set
