Great quali. Ferrari look unbeatable, while McLaren fall back. But Lando's last Q3 was epic. Max's was too after an early lockup that was a yellow sector, and only a PB in 2nd sector. Lap deleted but it was awesome. Mercedes looked very good

The race will see these teams closer than they have ever been in recent history. Get extra popcorn!

Kiwi bias hat is on. We all like Danny Ricc but Tsunoda was faster in FP1 and Quali. 3 to 5 tenths. He hasn't raced for a while, but Liam hadn't raced in F1 ever, not driven the 2023 car (Im sure thats correct) and hadn't even been to every track. This a bit of a stretch, but if Perez continues to disappoint, Tsunoda masters Danny Ricc in the last 5 races, well. Do the math!

Interesting race. Red Bulls are no longer disappearing up the road. Under Max still faster sure... but not like early season. Mercedes strategy seemed off - pitted way too late on that first one I think. Could have potentially won if they were closer. McLaren looked good early in the race and a shame about Piastri having to retire. With him potentially holding up Lewis and Max after the first stops I think there was a chance, albeit slim one, for Norris to win.

Kept a vague eye on Ricciardo during the race and thought he was quite disappointing. Probably would have finished dead last without the 3 retirements.

Turns out it was aerodynamically damaged per AT:

Tost:

As for Daniel, in the middle of the first stint he had a problem with the front left brake duct which broke, affecting the aerodynamics heavily, and losing a lot of downforce. He then couldn’t perform well because the car was no longer balanced.

Daniel had the fastest lap towards the end when he put the softs on, but Tsunoda had a free stop on the 2nd last lap so put softs on and took it off Daniel.

Agree. Yes I am a RBR fan from the Mark Webber days. RBR deserve all they have got, same for Mercedes in the equally if not more dominant years. Its got closer, as it did then. Max chose the strategy and did it. Pitted first so was at least exercising some control as the others reacted, apart form Mercedes. Mercedes were late, got badly undercut, Ferrari are great, but deg again punishes them. McLaren were great, but if you watched the new graphics (overlays) they were really poor on slow corners

Having said all that, its not a slam dunk anymore. Yes Max won, but not by much. Arguably, they ran the strategy best, but again, it wasnt by much, win wise

Begs the question, was the damage Franz Tost reported that bad??  If it was he would not have recorded any fast lap

Video of Ricciardo's last pit stop showed one of the crew wrenching a big chunk of something out of left front wing area before car was released.

Yeah it’s definitely heating up. Just need the rules to settle for a bit now so the field can bunch up. Next years are similar apparently so hopefully developments now continue over into next year and are directly applicable to the 2024 car.

Max was pretty flustered today. Sprint format means less testing sessions and I quite like what that does to the main race. Still think just one qualifying session but run the sprints in a reverse grid order.

Thread has dried up for some reason. Interesting race tomorrow, RBR dominance continues to erode. Tsunoda trending ahead of Danny Ricc. Perez has a goodish weekend so far, but still miles off the team mate. Can't help be impressed by McLaren. Started off as the dog of the year, and previous. Seems to me they are the Number 2 team now. By a margin. Piastri? Dunno whats going on there.

Go Max, Lando and Yuki!

Haas are providing some interesting drama for the down weekend, they commenced a Right of Review for the COTA Race 3 weekends ago.

Crux is, they are challenging the results for Perez, Stroll and Albon, alleging that the Race Stewards didn't pick up and enforce Track Limits violations on Turn 6 (unlike Austria where AM appealed the results, Turn 6 is actually corner cutting), Albon was already investigated but the stewards at the time dismissed it citing lack of evidence.

Haas seem to have poured over a lot of on board cameras and found that there are quite a few instances where the onboard from the car behind captures enough to show the car was definitely over track limits.

It's currently stuck on if this is a "significant and relevant new" thing (should find out in the morning about that part), but if Haas are correct, it could change the results in a bit of a weird way, they reckon that for Perez, they have enough evidence that the penalties would drop him from 4th to 9th.

Anyway, Las Vegas next weekend, and decent times for us to watch for a change.

Yep, looking forward to watching quali and the race live! Hoping a new track evens out the drivers a little

Thrown out.

And yet...

. Given that, notwithstanding the formal outcome of this Decision, the Stewards have seen
individual pieces of evidence that show what appear to be potential track limit breaches at the
apex of Turn 6, they find their inability to properly enforce the current standard for track limits
for all competitors completely unsatisfactory and therefore strongly recommend to all
concerned that a solution to prevent further reoccurrences of this widespread problem be
rapidly deployed.

Reminds me of a certain world cup final where ref awards a penalty based on what they can see, then sees a replay and says sorry that's not how I viewed it at the time, but still lets the penalty kick occur.  Then at other times a try can be awarded but then taken away based on an infringement detected much earlier.

Anyhow this issue in F1 is mostly related to those supermarket carpark type tracks where the race track is painted onto flat ground.  Barriers or kitty litter or damaging curbing etc tend to focus the driver a bit more...
