Yeah this one is a completely new financial model with F1 themselves investing in this race, rather than venues paying to host.

The weather/time of year and time of race event is just crazy for an F1 race. Feels like carnage waiting to happen with cold breaks and tyres, long fast straights and no way to heat the components for grip.

I had hoped this could reward those teams normally too hard on their tyres but the track looked like it was slippery as anything. The safety car lap just screamed as you can hear the wheel spin from the tyres as they try to put the power down.

Potentially could be quite processional with cars just doing loops like a train in the cold on a narrow track.

Do wonder how they’ll safely secure those covers if it’s the actual frame lifting out from the fresh asphalt surface. Might need to unwell the lids and work to attach the frames more securely down below, then reweld the lids back on. That all sounds time consuming when the show is on a tight timeframe and is about to start.

Really hoping that FIA suspend any racing penalties because of this for the repairs, would be extremely unfair otherwise (hopefully also dragging FOM who are the organisers for this race in front of the stewards too).

Sainz is getting a 10-place grid drop for the race, the Stewards couldn't use any force majeure type waiver of engine allocation penalties...

FIA Decision:

Accordingly, the mandatory penalty specified under Article 28.3 of the Sporting Regulations must be applied.

The Stewards note that if they had the authority to grant a derogation in what they consider in this case to be mitigating, unusual and unfortunate circumstances, they would have done so, however the regulations do not allow such action.

Feel really bad for Sainz, but have to admit Ferrari and Alpine did an excellent job getting their cars back in spec. The Ferrari apparently had a giant hole in the floor you could see the track through, and the enclosure thing that came up damaged the seat. That's just scary to think about...

As for the racing... FP2, when it actually ran, wasn't too bad and it does seem a bit trickier than it looks on paper. However, McLaren seemed to be struggling the most to adjust the car and lost a few laps in the session because of it, hopefully they've managed to figure something out overnight.

I get the feeling long term, there probably won't be any big memorable moments (maybe a championship or two if they continue to run it late in the year), I get the feeling the main legacy the track will have is that "it's different", which does fit the Las Vegas ethos I guess... but yeah. Would be happy to be proven wrong though.

Id say its about precedents. This is not common but not new. Bad luck, bad track? Common sense should prevail but when this happened in the past and CS didnt prevail, you have to rule that way. Well worth a force majeur addition to the rules. Screw up, make a bad call, suffer bad racing luck, tough. But suffer when ZERO was in your control, unfair. But Sainz penalty is IMO currently fair

I've been there, way cool (although not THAT cool)

If it creates a stronger F1 I'm all for that, but its JUST a race, it needs to maximise the sporting aspect. Ill assess how the track plays out this weekend.

C'mon Jaxson, when you firing up the 2024 thread?

Being reported this morning that Guenther Steiner has been given the elbow by Haas as TP.  Can't say that I'm surprised, perhaps only that he lasted this long.  He's certainly been one of the more colourful characters in the Paddock, as highlighted by Drive To Survive.

Although DTS has given him an enhanced profile, not sure it's done him any favours career-wise.  Hard to gauge his true skill-set, though he's had quite a few years with Haas so Gene must have seen something in him that he liked.  End of the day the results were poor last season, so probably time for a change.

Will be interesting to see how the new guy gets on.

Just read Max Verstappen autobiography, that guy has done nothing but drive since he was 4. Sounds like Jos was very very good at tuning karts. Also he like to use his fists and is on his 3rd wife. Was charged with attempted murder for driving over wife #2. Good book if you get a chance to read it.

Another good book is Tony Quinn the pet food guy who own Hampton Downs and Highlands motorsports park. That guy has had a real interesting life many failed businesses.
