Indeed congrats to Nico. I do wonder if this was his last chance given the changes in regs coming up for 2017.

Mercedes shouldn't have said anything. They put Lewis in this position, otherwise he would have won the title today if he hadn't suffered any of those three engine failures. Lewis did what he could to change the situation, especially as Mercedes already had the constructors championship sorted. He didn't put Nico in any physical trouble, was very smart in choosing how to slow them both down and let the rest catchup, just a shame the Max had the issue on Lap 1 otherwise it might have been different again.

I dont get the issue either, its tactics. I dunno what monetary effect winning or not winning would have had to the team though. They said they didnt want to influence the last race between the two contenders, but that's exactly what they were attempting to do.

Engine issues yes, but he also got free new engines for no penalty. Last year Nico had issues, swings and roundabouts, same with any sport. Its the final score that matters

Great show of perseverence, consistency and making the most of every opportunity.

I'm not terribly impressed with Mercedes intervention though. With the constructor's championship already won and one of their drivers guaranteed the driver's championship, they have always taken the position that their drivers were free to race and that they would do everything within their power to ensure that it was an open and even contest for the title. For them then to introduce team orders at the 11th hour in an attempt to stop the "contest" playing out on track overstepped the mark for me.

Fully agree. And they talk about making F1 more exciting, then that??

It had been their intention from the beginning of the year and in many cases had benefited Lewis.

They're there to race. But they're primarily there to advertise Mercedes, and driving around risking the win isn't a good look.

He's paid tens of millions of dollars to obey orders and do what he is told.

Nico retires, wow, thats a surprise to everyone.

Clearly he's not into the money, or the ego, this was his goal to win the title. While everyone in F1 will be living F1, he will be living his life with his family, much as Jensen has said. But still hard to believe.

I felt after Lewis won last year, Nico unleashed himself. IMHO he is as fast as Lewis, but he lacks that do or die killer instinct. he won the last 4 races after Lewis took the title and the next 3. Lewis had a run, he had a run, and the stats lie for the end part of the season as Lewis had nothing to lose, while Nico did, so the end season wasn't great, but it got the title. I had thought that that step would be added next year, as he has won the title, a free reign with less pressure, so he can just hang it out every race.

Makes me feel he wont race again, anywhere. He doesnt need to go to stamp shops now that has the full collection, so to speak.

Next question is who will replace him? Here are my thoughts, I will assume that contacts can and will be broken

Max

No. He has won, Danny Ricc has won in this Mercedes dominated era. Engine will improve, next year is aero important, he will stay.

Danny Ricc

Yes. Top team, and I can really see over time that Max becomes the favoured one in RBR.

HELL YESSSSSSSS. Arguably the best driver in F1. He is 35, have him for 2 years, awesome, and that leaves the stage open for the next big thing when Alonso nears retirement.

Could be a one year fill in, and at his age a likely fill in, but he has lost his ice man edge many feel, although he's been good this year.

Hamilton-Alonso it has to be. Top driver, miffed where he is, two year contract gives Mercedes a terrific option and plenty of time to look past that.

Of course nico will race again. At a different level. It runs in the blood. Nothing else fulfils that rush of blood to the head.

Main question is who will replace him. In a way it doesn't matter they have Hamilton.

They'll need to look to the future earlier than the 2018 they had previously set. Alonso would be a shortterm fix while they wait for Max or someone young to turn up

Mercedes did like the German connection with Niko.

Is there anyone else on offer with that connection?

Kimi did well this season, the car suited him better. Wonder what next years will be like for him.

Fernando sure wouldn't say no to a better car.

Daniel would be an interesting choice, but he's actually doing ok where he his. Red Bull have improved a fair bit recently.

Haha Alonso ... we will see a lot of fireworks ... even Nico's only option was to leave. But he left at the top. RETIRED by Hamilton.

Cars are made fast by the drivers. They have an input in making the car faster. Obviously if the car is miles behind there's nothing much that can be done. I remember when Schumacher went to Ferrari they were slow as. He made the team fast and faster until no one could touch them.
