What is so difficult to understand in "we can't win this game, so just don't go out playing silly shots".
LBW or clean bowled fair enough, but getting caught in the deep or behind square is inexcusable. Sure they started the day thinking they could win, but four wickets in just over an hour in the first session should have meant the shutters went up. Mind you, easy to say from my armchair, but it's not fair on the tail-enders to be expected to try and salvage a draw.

Its even worse, they have hit the balls directly to the plans that they know England have put in place, but they couldnt help but play the shot. CDGH whilst fell for a plan at least scored some good runs.

Sodhi is really showing the improvements he has made in domestic. Man he smashed that 4. and his defense is technically very good.

So all the fielders look to be in close, and the English support staff are throwing back any balls that make the boundary.

Since when do bystanders get to be fielders?

Shouldn't the actual fielders have to run and get the ball. Use up their muscles, oxygen, and own minutes.

It's just not cricket really is it? For example, Wagner has scored 2 runs from 57 balls (must be close to a world record for the slowest scoring)? Even when they could easily score runs they stay fixed to the spot. This has been going on for hours with the Blackcaps lamely trying to get a draw so they win the series.

It's just so boring, no booooooooooooooooooooooooooring is a better way to describe it!

England now has SIX fielders within about a metre from the batsman -- you gotta be kidding! One of England's fielders is even on his knees while bowlers fire down bouncer after bouncer hoping to hit a wrist or edge of the bat.

Some of the best test cricket Ive seen in years.

The exact opposite of England in Auckland 2015.

Sodhi = Champion.

Wow I take back what I said earlier. What a mental battle. Unreal. Sodhi has produced something very special with that innings, as you said a total champion. He must be knackered from concentrating like he has been. And Wagner 7 from over 100 haha. Very cheeky him reviewing that.

A lot of people would find that very boring but I reckon it's a part of what test cricket is all about. We were far, far from perfect but really our bowling performance on day 1 of the first test earned us the right to be able to play like this for a series win.

Anyway it's a series win in the books and that all we'll remember in years to come...

What the review did was use up valuable time.
I think the tailenders will be bought many beers by the top order tonight!

This is what Larsen and co have wanted from Santner and Astle, Sodhi was in a different position as just a bowler as they didnt think he was a batsman. He took the comments on board and it showed in his domestic cricket. And now when we needed a hero we could count on he was there. The only batsman not to fall for traps knowing where the fielders were and not hitting it directly to them. Stoic, well done Ish, legend.

I think Sodhi has cemented his position in the test team. Hopefully he tours on turning pitches and shows how darn good a bowler he is.

Very very very proud of our team. Especially Sodhi, CDGH, Latham, Wagner, Watling, Southee. Bowling wise whilst we lost the plot post new ball, Southee and Boult were devastating first innings with new ball.

Ok so end of year success in a place I never thought we would climb to in a million year.

NZ 3rd ranked ICC Test Team in the WORLD. From 4.5 million who probably play as much softball as cricket.

Leap frogging Australia and England.

Note the difference in tests played not only above us or below but England 16 more already. A long way left in the test season but this makes me VERY proud of our acheivements and why I expect so much from the team. Like Richie Mccaww said when asked about are we afraid only being a country of 4.5mil people we will get overlapped. NZ cricket players have a duty to leave the blackcaps in as good or better state as when they joined. And that also means us fans have a duty to be as critical of our players to play beyond our national talent per capita, which is why I at times sound harsh, but its fair.

I only followed the game via ESPNCricinfo so today when I was in a Farmer's store and Sky 1 were replaying highlights of the last session I saw down to watch.

The online commentary did not describe the excitement, English player's angst and the close calls that the NZ players had. Really exciting stuff and congratulations to all the players but especially to Wagner and Sodhi for their fantastic rear-guard action. A critic might argue that we should have been in the that situation with Williamson and Taylor gone cheaply but give credit to the English - they played their hearts out.

It was interesting to listen to the BBC5 podcast also where they asked why did the English bowl so many short balls to our players, most of which they could duck under and waste the bowler's energy when balls bowled to the stumps were likely to have better results.  And an interesting comment that Colin de Grandhomme  getting out to a short pitched delivery was probably a good thing for NZ since it meant the English felt that short-pitched bowling was the right approach.

You really believe that?

Yes, its true, that is the ranking, which shows how fake this ranking system is. Do what the ATP does, weight it.

Beat a top side, get big points. beat a lowly side get naff all

Windies sucked

Pakis too until they worked out our conditions then they hammered us

AUS hammered ENG

ENG lost 12 tests in a row, or similar?

Then we get a win and a draw and we are No.3? After how badly we bat? Thank Mr Southee and Mr Boult. Great as they are and how the lesser batsmen have often saved us, thats not No.3, sorry
